As a few of us here might know, March 21st was the 30th anniversary of Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, the second to last film in the Showa series and the first appearance of Mechagodzilla himself.

Use this thread to discuss the film, maybe how and when you first saw it and what you think of it. I'll add my comments later.

GvsMG has always been one of my favorites. In fact, it was one of the first Godzilla movies I ever bought [in fact one of the first VHS tapes I ever purchased].

I bought it in a Goodtimes home video dual pack along with Godzilla vs Gigan, probably around 12 years ago, possibly a little longer.

Why is it one of my favs? First, IMO it has one of the better stories of the Showa films; sure it suffers from similar story problems as some of the other films, but the overall fantastic-ness of the story more than makes up for it's detriments. Second, MechaGodzilla of course, Godzilla's first robotic opponent and one of his toughest. Aside from King Ghidorah, MG has always seemed to me the only other kaiju capable of taking out Godzilla [showa era]. The hurtin' he put on Anguirus really shows off MechaGodzilla's power, and then we get a whole new treat once we finally see MG's true form and then nearly takes out Godzilla. Third on my list is King Caesar, he's quick and agile unlike most of Godzilla's foes or allies. King Caesar is certainly good in a fight, I think that GvMG makes it clear that w/o King Caesar's help Godzilla might not have triumphed over MechaGodzilla. Plus his ability to reflect MechaGodzilla's beam weapon was just cool, no other kaiju had that ability.

Here's to hoping we get a great region 1 DVD of Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla on par with or better than Sony's GxMG release.

From the depths of this forum I bring this thread new life!!! Image

Ok, well after getting the R1 of GvsMG and watching it more then 2 dozen times since then (yea I know it's a bit excessive), I have to say this is a GREAT FILM! Tons of childhood memories were brought back with this one (I haven't seen this movie a while since my VHS died on me) and it was good to see it full of color and looking beautiful Image Only bad thing about this movie is that KS is way overhyped. I mean he tries to take on MG and gets turn into cannon fodder (ok he scored a few good hits a few times but that's it) and then when Godzilla shows up, he kind of falls into the background. WHERE WAS HE WHEN GODZILLA WAS BEING BLASTED ALL OVER THE PLACE?!?! But that's really the only bad part of this movie, everything else is great :) Oh and since it has been so long since I've seen this film, it was crazy how MG (in disguise) put a brutal beating on Angilas...I felt bad for him after watching that (he even gets kicked in the butt!) Image But yes, this will always be my 3rd fav G-film of all time (after GvsKG and ToMG) Image

My favorite shot is where MG simultaneously takes out Godzilla and KS; GREAT use of the widescreen format, totally lost in pan & scan. Love the cast, love the music, the locales, the story...

One thing I never quite got, though:

*SPOILER* (hey, somebody on this board hasn't seen it)

At the end, it *seems* like Dr. Miyajima, Masaiko, and the Interpol guy managed to get out of the alien base before it blew up, yet Shimizu talks like they all bought it...thoughts, anyone?

Roger

Am I the only who thought Godzilla was resting/sleeping/whatever in the warehouse when he 1st appears as a kidImage It use to baffle me as a kid, I was asking myself "what the hell is he doing in there."
