I don't mind dubbing on some of the Showa movies, as long as they were uncut (Like Mothra, Monster Zero, Gigan, Mechagodzilla...etc). I like the AIP dubs for Destroy All Monsters and Smog Monster. But..after seeing KK vs. G uncut/subtitled.....i can't ever go back to the US version. And I hope to "upgrade" to uncut/subtitled on some of the worse-off Showa movies (Godzilla Raids Again, Ghidrah, TOMG). So I guess it depends on the movie and how it was arranged for US release.

The Hesei series...is a different story...

The ones done by Titra are great, and of course we owe quite a bit to Speed Racer himself, Peter Franandez.

Oh, so that WAS him I thought I heard in a few of the dubs of those movies! What movies did he dub? I was also pleasantly surprised to hear Paul Frees contributing to the dub of "Rodan", along with George Takei (I think). Frees is one of my favorite voice actors, contributing to a lot of those great stop motion puppet Christmas cartoons, and starring as the voice of the alien invaders in "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers".

Some of the dubs of the Showa series are so familiar to me, hearing the original tracks feels a little bizarre. I've always felt the dubs add to the campiness and enjoyability of the early movies. I enjoy how they tried to give the characters a bit of a Japanese accent, and in the case of the new "Godzilla vs. Hedorah" dvd, I'm actually going to miss the dub from the Orion VHS tape. However, after seeing the original Godzilla 54 uncut last summer at the Fantasia Festival, I realized the movies are so much better uncut and subtitled.

@Megaloman:

> the new ones, i like the subs since the dub actors are so poor.

Exactly how I feel! Even though we had all this strange Frankenstein and King Kong stuff in Germany, the dubs were still decent and the job was done by real actors. I know several American dubs and I think they're quite good. Especially Godzilla Vs. Mothra comes to mind -- I like this one very much. :)
