Ishiro Honda and special effects

Postby Gojizilla » Fri Apr 18, 2014 5:45 am

I know Honda was the director for many of the most memorable pictures in the Godzilla series, but how much input did he have in the special effects of the films? Was he present on stage for the execution of the special effects sequences behind the camera, or did he deal with human side of the production?

I believe Honda and Tsuburaya worked out the storyboards together, but when it came to the actual production Honda was left to the human drama while Tsuburaya handled the effects. There was a level of trust between the two men but they did check in on each other to make sure there the final film would be as consistent as possible.

He directed the new effects scenes in Godzilla's Revenge with Teruyoshi Nakano.
