So how'd the alien mind control work?

I was reading this interview: with Ed Godziszewski and he said he thinks in DAM(and presumably Monster Zero as well) that the aliens didn't control the monsters like puppets and pretty much directed them where to go while the monsters' own instincts and thoughts handled the actual fighting and destruction. I prefer this interpretation as well, and he seems like a pretty authoritative source at this point, but I was wondering if there was anything that confirmed or denied this/what everyone else thinks. I guess things like Zone Fighter taking place before DAM might muddy the waters, but I'm wondering about the intent of these movies themselves and not the fact that in some "timeline" one might find that DAM is long after superhero Godzilla. Looking forward to anyone's input.

I figured that's what Godzilla vs. Gigan was getting at. The Nebula M Spacehunter aliens control Gigan and King Ghidorah through action signal tapes that broadcast directives in the form of sound. It's indistinguishable noise to people but monsters can understand it clearly, and Gigan and King Ghidorah each had a tape tailor-made to tap into their minds. Once the controls were destroyed, both monsters stood perplexed, having forgotten whatever motivation they just had.

I just bought Atomic Robo vol. 4 and, while I have yet to read it, I have flipped through it and Godzilla does make a small cameo.

Coincidence, or the subtle hand of destiny?

Anyway, yes: it always seemed to me that the monsters were given general commands - even Mechagodzilla - and not controlled like robots.

Even in '74 it seemed he was making decisions on his own and his control was more like orders.

It could be possible that she hadn't been rebuilt with that capability by the Black Hole aliens. I mean they're the ones who six million dollar man'ed her, they probably made it so that the only way she could possibly stop MechaGodzilla was to die.

That's all fan speculation, but I suspect that Katsura didn't know ANY other way to stop MechaGodzilla. Although honestly, I think the combined might of the military AND Godzilla could have probably killed MechaGodzilla and Katsura could have lived...but that's not DRAMATIC!
