Have just revisited this film for the first time in 10 years or more. And I must say, I was very impressed! Sometimes, you know, your good memories of a film are utterly obliterated by the crappy reality of the film (...King Kong Lives was a great example of this for me recently!). But this was not at all the case with Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. There is just a lot of cool stuff in this movie! If you would indulge me... a list!
(1) Godzilla fighting another Godzilla! SO. AWESOME! And, the explosives work during the battle is really, really impressive.
(2) Cool Interpol sub-plot, which adds a lot of intrigue and suspense to the film. The human plot kept my attention much more than I ever recalled it doing when I was but a kid.
(3) The Black Hole Aliens! These guys are super cool--their threads are flashy and their leader is a smooth "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!"!
(4) Mechagodzilla! Our mechanical titan truly comes across as menacing and EVIL. His demeanor is fierce and when he battles his foes, his fighting style and tactics are simply brutal and unrelenting. In my opinion, there is no other Showa "final" battle that is so utterly overwhelming and literally pulse-pounding.
(5) Three lovely ladies!
(6) Four cool kaiju: Mechagodzilla, Anguirus, King Caesar, and Godzilla! King Caesar is a very interesting and unique monster in the Toho stables. His more humanoid form allows him a greater and clearer display of an actual fighting style. During the opening of the battle against Mechagodzilla, King Caesar puts on quite a show! If I'm not mistaken, I believe I saw a couple Judo throws in there. Very cool stuff!
(7) Did I mention that the Black Hole Aliens appear to be distantly related to General Ursus?
This little touch may have been designed to take advantage of the popularity of Planet of the Apes (?), nevertheless, it is a cool flourish, and puts these Aliens above some of the other late-Showa era villains, like the Seatopians and the cockroach aliens from Space Hunter Nebula M.
A great sci-fi movie! If you haven't seen it recently, treat yourself and see it again!
"...WILL. IT. WORK?"
