Will never even attempt to sit through the "international" dubs of this, or Godzilla Versus The Sea Monster. It's not even worth it.
Anyway, this is by far the most underrated of all Godzilla movies. No matter about the awful Godzilla suit either. I always thought Godzilla looked real..."fatherly" here, which is of course, very appropriate! It's been a hot minute since I've watched this movie, but I plan to do so in the near future. My favorite part has always been when it starts to snow; the one and only time we ever see Godzilla battle an enemy in the thick of a blizzard, and Arikawa really pulls it off. Kumonga looks especially menacing when he pins Godzilla to the ground. Plus, how can you not love father and son teaming up and roasting the over-sized arachnid with their atomic breath?!! Son of Godzilla thoroughly validates the credibility of the "second-string" of kaiju eiga. Jun Fukuda, Shinichi Sekizawa, Sademasa Arikawa and Masaru Sato were all great filmmakers in their own right, and they added a significant layer to the Godzilla mythology.
Son of Godzilla is so endearing. The finale rivals Rodan for poignancy, and it's the quintessential "Godzilla Adventure". Brilliant Sato score, as well. As it sits, "S.O.G" is in my "top ten" of the greatest Godzilla movies ever made.
