this was the third Godzilla movie i ever saw, back in 1973 (after King Kong vs and Smoggie). that was all new footage to me, and loads of monsters i'd never seen before.
i did wonder why they had all that cool city destroying footage at the beginning of the movie, but it's such a good film that i never cared. i still love it. plus it's got that great theme song added to the US version.
i do think the title isn't the best, this is the movie that should have been called "Godzilla on Monster Island".
a true gem, and easily in my top five Godzilla movies.

Just meh in my book...but the theme song is catchy and as a kid I loved it...so I guess it did what it was supposed to do.

I think the best way to look at Godzilla's Revenge is as a stand alone film, completely separate from anything else in the Showa series and set in the "real world". Ichiro represents any little Godzilla fan who may have been living in Japan at the time and going through the same problems. In that respect I look at the film as sort of a tribute to the Godzilla series and since the movie is a children's film through and through that makes any of it's faults completely forgivable.
Personally, I find most complaints directed toward Godzilla's Revenge are coming from people who simply believe the film to be just another entry in the series that needs to be judged based on the films that have come before. That's not a really fair way to look at this movie, IMHO.

This was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw. I saw it in a theater back in the day, about 70 or 71 as a Saturday matinee screening. I didn't know it was stock footage at the time, so it was fantastic to me. Only thing that really disappointed me at the time were that many scenes during the opening credits (which I later learned were from "Destroy all Monsters") were not in the main film.

I think I like the opening credits more than the actual movie itself.
Insanely nerdy, but cool, 70's style techno music. Complete with bubble sounds and weird synth. samples.
Some of the most unique music I've ever heard.
Not to mention the stretched out Tohoscope lens effect.
I love that effect.
Cheesy. But fun!

Love this film
it was always one of my favorites as a kid...growing up I started to dislike it, then I learned more about it
it's like a best-of...it's great
I'll have to watch it at some point soon

Hey I rank this one REALLY high. Never had the slightest problem with it whatsoever, as it is a Golden age film and therefore automatically has alot going for it. I'm fully aware of it's shortcomings but so what I would put this up against any Heisei or Millenium Godzilla movie and dare someone to tell me this one isn't more enjoyable as in fun to watch.
Ichiro, man. That's all I gotta say.

Unjustly underrated, if you ask me. Heaven forbid, Toho sould try and do something different from all of the straight sci-fi and adventure stories they were doing with the rest of the series! In many ways, this is a perfect Godzilla movie. It embraces Godzilla's role as a lovable movie icon, without taking it too much in either direction (nuclear metaphor or friendly protector). Ishiro Honda has his fingerprint on every aspect of Godzilla's Revenge (considering the fact that he handled both human drama and tokusatsu sequences). To my taste, it's one of his best movies. And the use of stock footage is perfectly fitting, given the fact that everything is happening in Ichiro's dreams. Godzilla's Revenge is a wonderful, little film has been consistently, one of my most beloved of the series. Part nostalgia, but also in appreciation of all of its good qualities.

The bank robbers were hilarious! The dub acting was perfect. One of the very best.

One of my favorites when I was little kid, still love it to this day. Honestly, IMO, theres not one bad showa Godzilla movie. The Showa Godzilla films were some of the best Monster films ever.

Godzilla's Revenge is a movie in which the monsters only appear in a kid's dream. The only new monster is this flim has the same name as the main bully. It was a very funny movie for a movie about Godzilla.

I liked this one as a kid, then as the years went on I fell in with the group of fans who love to slam it, call it a piece of crap, whatever...but in the past couple of years or so, especially with Classic Media's DVD release, I've come to enjoy and appreciate it a whole lot more. I'm still not a big fan of the extensive use of stock footage, but it's forgivable, I suppose. I like the idea of its being set in the real world with a nerdy kid who loves Godzilla escaping into his dreams--it reminds me of myself at that age. The characters, especially the toy consultant and bank robbers, are terrific, the music is great, and the fights between Godzilla and Gabara are, for my money, some of the best in the series.
That being said, while the messages Honda gives in his movies usually resonate with me, I can't say I agree with the ending moral for this one. He overcomes the head bully, then usurps the kid's position? :naughty: It seems very un-Honda to me. But whatever. A very fun movie, all in all, and certainly underrated.
