I quickly compared the original Continental version to this half-assed attempt to re-create it this afternoon. A lot of footage is shuffled around, sometimes causing major synchronization problems with the audio and visuals shown during action footage. There was some footage even missing, along with fade-outs that weren't there originally. I can't tell whether these are commercial fade-outs, and if they took the footage out to shorten the film for broadcast purposes. There are two unique transitions to the Continental version that probably won't be restored even if they do re-create the original Continental version.
Continental: At the end of the meteor shower, Ghidrah’s meteorite capsule is shown landing on earth, where the film then cuts to the police station.
CBC: Ghidrah’s meteorite is shown crashing after the plane explodes.
Continental: A character at Mt. Aso remarks that prophecies are absurd, cutting to the camp in the mountains.
CBC: A character at Mt. Aso remarks that prophecies are absurd, cutting to Naoko and Shindo at home.
Continental: Malmess’ boss remarks that he will be killed if he fails his mission, where it then dissolves from the evil boss to a plane flying in the air. This is a transition unique only to this version. Classic Media should use whatever original Continental material they have for this short transition.
CBC: Malmess’ boss remarks that he will be killed if he fails his mission, where it then fades to black and then back to the plane.
Continental: The assassin scene in the car cuts to Shindo in the police station saying he found the bracelet.
CBC: The assassin scene in the car cuts to the camp scene in the mountain shown earlier in the Continental version. However, about 15 seconds of dialogue are MISSING from this version for no apparent reason that was there originally!
Continental: When the trio are at the bar drinking Blue Mountains, the bartender notices the Martian girl on tv where it cuts to the television and back to their reactions.
CBC: When the trio are at the bar drinking Blue Mountains, the television is shown at the end of the scene.
Continental: Rodan’s entrance is edited heavily from the original Japanese footage, losing a poor effect shot of Rodan’s beak nearly falling off his face, among other edits.
CBC: I believe the entire scene is from the Japanese version, causing the audio to not match with the footage.
Continental: Princess Salno remarks that the boat must not sail with Naoko asking why it can’t in one shot. Rodan is shown three times stalking Godzilla, with footage from Godzilla later in the film looking into the sky.
CBC: Princess Salno remarks that the boat must not sail with footage of the boat placed after her dialogue, cutting back to Naoko (this causes footage to be MISSING). Rodan is shown once stalking Godzilla, along with more synchronization flaws such as Rodan’s flying noise on the soundtrack when Godzilla is coming out of the water. Sloppy.
Continental: Godzilla’s entrance in Tokyo is heavily edited from the original Japanese footage.
CBC: I believe the Japanese footage is used, causing serious synchronization flaws.
Continental: The first Godzilla vs Rodan fight is edited from the original Japanese version. A shot of Rodan dissolves into the Diet building where a military conference is held.
CBC: I believe the original Japanese footage is used during the fight scene. There is no fade at all to the Diet building, in fact, the Diet building is not shown (it is in the Japanese and Continental versions).
Continental: The power goes out cutting to a shot of a jeep.
CBC: The power goes out, fades to black, and then shows the jeep.
Continental: Police officer tells people to keep moving along the path, cutting to Naoko asking the faeries if the monsters are really arguing.
CBC: Police officer tells people to keep moving along the path, fades to black, then to Naoko asking the faeries if the monsters are really arguing.
Continental: Godzilla gets shot in the crotch, causing the mountain slide which kills Malmess.
CBC: Godzilla getting hit in the crotch is shown later in the film, causing more differences in the final battle between the two versions.
Continental: Original release had a “THE ENDâ€
