Didn't Nakajima hit his head on his way into the pool and actually get KO'd?

I have a question, and I realize this may be somewhat off topic, but is "King Kong Escapes" supposed to be continuation of the Kong storyline following "King Kong Vs. Godzilla" or is "King Kong Escapes" supposed to be a "stand alone" type of movie seeing as how it was based on the animated series?
