Here, settle it this way. Now, both opinions of the battles' climax have been voiced, so i'll add this one. This is the way i've always seen it myself. It doesn't matter that the ape surfaced and Godzilla didn't. I took that to mean that he had to in order to get away (he never could stay underwater like almost every other Toho monster can). So Godzilla never surfaced? He can stay underwater after all. And Kong had to get back to his island.
Script or not, reality or not i wouldn't want to believe that the most indestructible monster the world has ever seen could get beat by a giant ape. That Godzilla won has been ingrained in my mind since i was little and i don't want to lose the high. I'm willing to meet on a more neutral standpoint in light of new evidence, but there is no freakin' way i'm gonna say that that stupid gorilla beat the legend.
