Remaking Hedorah

I've always wanted to see Hedorah revisited, much like everyone that posted. In fact, a quite a few months ago, on the old board I had some artwork displayed. A sketch really, I've since redesigned some of it and inked it, but my scanner is on the fritz and I just don't have the money right now to replace it. So I'll post the old sketch I did for those that may not of seen it.

When I first came up with the design, I made it for a possible Heisei revisited comic. But the Showa origin was cool as well, and could easily work today. I would get rid of the beam weapon though, I always thought it seemed out of place. I would then make Hedorah able to whip acidity pieces of himself at his oppenent, like naplam, as well as a vomit forth a spew of gooey like acid, not like Biolantte, more gooey, toxic and disgusting.

My fave Godzilla movie of the Showa series. If they re-made it right, it could be a dark, brooding kaiju film, that might be interesting..... Maybe it could even be set in the future, that might be interesting. Something like Blade Runner, only with kaiju in it.

Every scene with smoke? Super obvious masking of effects is almost as bad as crap effects. Look at GINO. Didn't think iguanas were nocturnal, did 'ja? Also, you never get that kind of rain in New York that time of year. They even mentioned that in the novel. EXCUSE ALERT!

How cheesy would it be if a fog preceded every kaiju on the planet?

Use it once, when you need to hit the audience like a ton of bricks. G2K and GxMG did this very successfully, but after the opening then they weren't afraid to show their work because the audience had already accepted it. But by the same token, if every opening sequence is concealed, people notice a pattern. You have to use it when it'll work.

Well, not "concealed". Minor use of smoke and fog. Look at the Star Trek movies. Even though there isn't supposed to be "fog" in space, they added just enough fog to Spacedock to make it look absolutely gargantuan, altohugh the viewer doesn't conciously realize there's any smoke. That's what needs to be done to add that touch of realism. This is a huge part of the reason why G3's monsters looked as big as they did--use of smoke and fog that didn't conceal anything but made the sets look big by adding weather effects.

I'm sure they could easy-squeezy--it's just a matter of having not tried it before, maybe because it would just take too long to get the stage fogged up or something. I agree with you that it shouldn't be blanketed in fog, though--indeed it makes the audience wonder why the sky has suddenly become soupy.

That's true in a sense, but I don't think it carried that atmosphere quite all the way through, what with the Monty Python cartoons and scenes of Godzilla flying, etc. While these types of things certainly make it unique, they kinda work against the overall grain of the movie and tend to stick out wierdly for me. Specifically, imagine the future as seen in Terminator 2 and 3. Now make that a setting for a kaiju movie. :drool:

Well, I thought those animated sequences fitted in nicely, giving the film a more edgier and quirky tone. They still had that odd disturbing quality the rest of the film had. You might've thought the cartoons stuck out like a sore thumb, but I thought they complimented the film quite well indeed. And Godzilla flying was just great fun to watch. Stuff like that shows you can make a film with a serious message without being overly serious.
Personally, I wouldn't like to see any 'Terminator-style' approaches made to Japanese monster flicks. it seems a bit too 'western' to me, and wouldn't fit in a Godzilla picture. All that post-apocalyptic stuff just doesn't appeal to me at all - very dull, IMO.

If every movie was like that, yes, I'd agree it would get old. But I could see one post-apocalyptic movie for a change. On TokyoMonsters.com, before it became a GMMG-only site, there was a teaser trailer that actually had an animated version of the GvsMG advance poster! That's what game me the idea...it was a really cool shot, with the twisted wrekage of cities and the flying laser bolts.

Even though Godzilla vs the Smog Monster is a pretty bad film, there are some good points to it that could be built on for a killer revival. I've always felt that the movie had great ideas that suffered from poor execution.

Smog Monster is one of the only films that shows a kaiju killing people, this needs to happen more often, and it should, if Hedorah is revived.

I'd also like to see Hedorah composed of more than just sludge, with some solid garbage mixed in. He could use pieces of sharp garbage as a weapon.

As a defense, he could open holes in his liquid body, to allow Godzilla's flame to pass through without harm.

Well Buckaroobwana, sorry to disagree, it is not a bad film. Except the part were Godzilla flies, everything else is just great.....a vision in filmmaking. But even the part where he flies makes sense, though it was utterly ridiculous. Just as "Godzilla vs. Megaguilas" had a scene where Godzilla jumped to the stratosphere and landed on his opponent, these films have some pretty farfetched parts in them. That does not make them bad films, no matter how much anyone denies it.

I'd love to see a revamp of Hedorah using today's animatronics and CGI. I'd insist on a hefty level of fun cheese if it were to be made. I'm not saying he should fly in this version but a sense of humor would be recommended.
