Godzilla 1985 is the first movie I can ever remember seeing. I still love it to this day...but Godzilla On Monster Island is the one that effectively changed my life. I must have been no more than 3-4 years old, but I vividly remember first seeing this movie, under the title of Godzilla vs. Gigan. I still use both titles, by the way, however I tend to be mored biased towards the catchier titles of kaiju eiga. Godzilla On Monster Island is no more appropriate than Frankenstein Conquers The World, but it's much more fun than simply "Godzilla vs. Gigan" or "Frankenstein vs. Baragon". I alternate constantly.
Anyway, the monsters, the music, the sound effects, the special effects, the quirky characters, the aliens, those gorgeous-looking sky back-drops, etc. etc. etc. It all started here, and I haven't looked back since. In my most recent rankings in the "Rank The Godzilla Films" thread, Godzilla On Monster Island placed at number four, but among those top five, it can easily supplant any of those movie on any given day. Being another of my "critic-proof" Godzilla movies, the only bad thing I can say about it is that it's "the poor-man's Ghidrah". But I love the "poor-man's Ghidrah", so there we are lol!
Th hilight for me is when Godzilla is revived by the engergy of the Godzilla Tower, he thumps his chest ala King Kong, and..."GODZILLA'S STRONG AGAIN!!" And then, in perfect profile, Godzilla delivers the most perfect tail thump to Gigan that he ever administered! I mean, it was a clean shot, that connects at the right part of Gigan's abdomen. And then he follows it up by going all "Joey Kocur" on him by beating the crap out of him while he's down (All of my fellow Detroit-area neighbors will undoubtedly get the sports metaphor lol!). Priceless!
