Hanging out with Yasuyuki Inoue this past week in Hollywood, and getting to look over the copies of his storyboards for HEDORAH, I can tell you that Godzilla did not rip out the eyes (because he was digging deep inside of the creature), since it clearly states that what was pulled out of the smog monster's body was indeed "Hedorium"... There is no mention on the notes next to the original storyboards of eyes (the same is true of the screenplay), but rather that it was Hedorium, from inside the creature's body.
This is the same story that director Yoshimitsu Banno told us when we visited him at Toho back in 1990 -- and every Japanese book with references to the film also states that the Hedorium is deep inside of Hedorah's body, and not in its eyes (Oru Kaiju Sashin Zukan; Kurosaki Shuppan, 1971). I know what Nakano has said, but the storyboard, screenplay, art director and film's director's stories all corraborate...
