Was Godzilla, King of the Monsters really so bad?

I was lucky enough to see the press screening of Rialto's marvelously subtitled Japanese GODZILLA. In the nine minute clip we saw after the movie, the Americanized version was held up to ridicule.
I still like GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS a lot.
I know the subplot of Ogata-Emiko-Serizawa triangle, Serizawa's role and the anti-nuclear message were all diluted by the Americanization and the dubbing was not the best, but still... It's a good movie: the movie still retained it's power and the anti-nuclear testing message was still there. Raymond Burr was a fine actor; I think his dialogue was just right with his scenes cleverly and effectively inserted.
My biggest beef is with the editing. Some powerful scenes were cut short and I think a lot of the rearranged scenes, in retrospect, look weird. However, I do think the editing after Godzilla's rampages tightened up the pacing a bit.

I've been fortunate to see both GODZILLA and GKTOM on the big screen, and the movies really work well together, I think.

G: KOTM is a good film and one of the best American dubbed ones when comparing it to most of the other Godzilla movies. Also, Raymond Burr did a fine job and actually developed a sense of respect for the monster.

Some people may ridicule Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but think of it this way (Steve Ryfle points this out in his book): If it weren't for GKOTM, this board wouldn't be here today. The Americanized version opened the doors to the western world for this and the other films that followed.
