Takashi Shimura was the man. I always thought of him as a Japanese Morgan Freeman.

And the voice he has in the dubbed version sounds like Elmer Fudd, which is why he can't say "phenomenon"

How exactly does he pronounce it in the dub? I haven't seen that version of the movie in years.

Actually, that's a known fact. George Lucas said so, himself.

Shimura is simply one of the greatest actors ever. His performances in Ikiru, Seven Samurai, and many others, are some of the best ever captured on film. As Dr. Yamane in Godzilla, he gives the film the strong, authoritarian figure that it needs. It not a very demanding role, but Shimura-san made it interesting (forgetting to tuck in his tie before speaking at the Diet Building). And yeah, the voice that dubbed him over in GKOTM was pretty bad, but I've heard it ever since I was little, so it's very familiar to me.

Takashi Shimura is one of my all-time favorite actors. I found him especially impressive in "Ikiru," and he was indeed a great presence in all the movies he appeared in.

Now as for this "phenonemum at de top o'de wurl..." Common sense says I should cringe at the thought of such a wonderful performance being obliterated by lousy dubbing, it always makes me grin.
