How do you feel about the way the monsters were portrayed in this movie? Their looks, sounds, powers, and origin story?
I think Godzilla was handled really well. No complaints about the design, or anything. What bugs me a bit is the Burning Godzilla power up. It feels like a weird mishmash of Burning Godzilla, the Super Godzilla power up, and the nuclear pulse combined yet it lacks a certain oomph to it despite being super OP.
I like the more slender design. The wings are still massive and it's still fluffy. Mothra seems to be lacking her powder attack... but also not? The scene she's trying to establish contact with Godzilla seems like she's using the powder or when she gets blasted to hell. The new abilities are cool and the pincers work. The stinger reminds me of GMK. I just wish we had more Mothra in the film. If you watch the end credits, it mentions an mysterious egg being washed up. I think its safe to say Mothra is not truly dead. Who thinks Mothra might also come back in the next one?
It's nice to see Rodan again after all these years. Top notch design. I kinda wish they did more with his fire ability. Does it have a fire ability? You can see fire trailing it wherever it goes, but they don't clear establish if it has any flaming powers. Rodan also gets a really cool scene, but I still wish he had more screen time. They missed out on giving us a really cool aerial battle in this movie. The final battle should have had all 4 of them in a battle royale instead of just focusing on Godzilla and Ghidorah. I love this Rodan and I hope we'll see more of him, but I doubt it.
Wow, where do I even begin with Ghidorah? They managed to make it an alien lifeform and not make it seem out of place in this movie. If this movie had the tone of the previous one, it would be seriously weird, but it works in this movie. I'm sure I wasn't the only one shocked to see one of its heads getting ripped off early in the movie. It was a seriously holy crap moment and you start questioning how that plays out in the rest of it. Then they pull another twist by allowing it to regrow the head. That was so cool. The energy draining power could have played a bigger part. You can clearly see Ghidorah draining Godzilla's energy when it bit him. But what does that energy do? Does it just power up Ghidorah or gives him new attacks? This should be explored more.
I'm very happy with the way all 4 of them came out in this movie. They really updated the look, the powers, and their backstories.

Godzilla:
My major complaint is how “ugly” the burning Godzilla was executed... it looked like the powered up state in the Godzilla Unleashed game... the nuclear pulse effect was just messy (cool effect with Mothra wings), and the overall end of the fight was just a mess..why not have goji use his breath attack instead... Overall Godzilla was very well executed and only suffered in the end
Mothra:
She was executed very well, the new look gives it new attacking possibilities.. too bad the involvement in the final battle was just thrown together.. Additionally the pace of the movie meant that Mothras sacrifice wasnt allowed the weight it deserved..
King Ghidorah:
Overall great design and look but didnt really get to shine and show his evilness...
Rodan:
My biggest disappointment of the film.. in my eyes Rodan is top tier... having him easily overwhelmed by Ghidorah and then easily beaten by Mothra annoyed me all to hell.... plus he bent the knee to both Ghidorah and then Godzilla.. im sorry but Rodan is the prick of the group, he shouldnt kneel before anyone....EVER... also highly disappointed that the spectacular money shot of Rodan crashing into KG didnt lead to an amazing air clash
I think for me as a fan the major thing missing was the appropriate roars of the monsters..even if theyre slightly reimagined they are such integral parts that I felt their unique sound cues..
I would have preferred if the big 3 had ganged up on Ghidorah, it would have better justified their inclusion as well as really shown what a threat KG was....
this movie visually looked exactly like what my minds eyes see when watching the older movies.. (ghidorah the 3 headed monster invthis instance)

I thought Godzilla was great. I loved that they gave him some more caricaturized personality. I think you can actually start talking about TJ Storm as a "Godzilla performance" now and I think he did a great job here.
I also LOVED KG. I thought the menace was totally there and again, I LOVED the personality he showed. He's menacing and evil and arrogant and I loved how the heads talked to one another.
The other two are where my problems start to settle in but overall I liked them a lot...
still, Mothra feels like she's just kinda...there. Everything about her is right, more or less. She looks great, sounds PERFECT, and they did what they said they were gonna do in beefing up her offense while still retaining her elegance...but she didn't really DO much.
Rodan does a little more, but feels the least like himself. It's a solid design, but the roar doesn't get there for me at all and I kinda don't see why this was RODAN and not just like...fire bird.
Behemoth is my kinda favorite of the new batch, though none of them really do much, I just think it's an interesting design. Maybe that's because I'm so attracted to kaiju that could be executed as men in suits aesthetically. I liked it.
The MUTO Prime (Pretty sure that's what it was) made me happy to see because I definitely didn't WANT the MUTOs to feel like a complete throwaway one-and-done. The inclusion here and the way it was done was all I wanted and I'm glad to have it.
Scylla is neat. Kids in the audience (of which there were quite a few) thought it was Kumonga.
Methuselah is like...I don't even know. It's hardly worth even mentioning quite honestly. If you asked me to describe it I'd just vaguely wave my hand around and say, "It's big...?"

Just what is the damn problem with using near identical roars anyways?
sure mix them up a bit as you do with Godzilla but dont completely eliminate the sound...
theyre such unique sounds, why not have that thunder away in the theater...

Their voices are my biggest gripe with the monsters. I expected remixes of their classic roars, the way they did Godzilla's, but they all got new ones. The ones we got were fine, I was just surprised that they went to such lengths to get these kaiju in the film and then disregarded their classic voices pretty much entirely.

I think Godzilla sounds great. Mothra sounds great. Ghidorah sounds fine - I feel like his roar has changed so much through Toho over the years anyway and you hear the classic one mixed in there enough that it sounds like a version of Ghidorah to me.
Rodan sounds like "giant monster A" from any generic thing. He's the only one where I understand the roar complaint.

A major thing that was lacking was the usual city destruction scenes.. granted they damn near scaled the monsters out of proper size but a proper KG laying waste to a city would have been nice.. Rodan fly by not enough

So each KG head had its own distinct performer and personality.. one of the heads has received a reputation as the ditzy/goofball head (all over fan art).,., did anyone notice any major standout personality from the heads?

Left head was the curious and ditzy one, the central head was definitely the boss and more business, not sure I recall anything special about the right...

^ Nifty!
I read that the art book doesn't have any design work for the 'cameo kaiju.' Is that right?

I was looking forward to the artbook as a potential goldmine for the info I craved on the other Titans, what a letdown.
