Monster Zero x SciFi Japan - Archive Only

Ok, so just out of curiosity, I looked in multiple cities within 100mi of Boston, NYC, dc, Miami, New Orleans, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles using the movie app on my phone and it seems after tomorrow all of those places that now have a theater or two showing it will not tomorrow through Wednesday at least with the exception of Boston, NYC, and LA. So if you planned to see it again in theatres tonight may be your last chance for some time unless you're in 1 of those 3 areas.

Actually, I was talking about worldwide numbers, where Godzilla is still at number 8...for now...

but Guardians will overtake it (it has yet to open in China), Turtles has a chance to overtake it, and there's still stuff like Maze Runner, Hunger Games, Interstellar, and Hobbit left.

The movie's a success and I like it and that's all that matters, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't slightly disappointed that it won't finish in the top ten for the year.

$520 million is nothing to sneeze at, particulalry for a film many so-called experts said was DOA.

Given the huge opening weekend (and even more impressive opening day), I do think this picture probably could've made another $50-$100 million domestically had the stars been more properly aligned.

By properly aligned, I mean a better weekend (not snugged between Spider-Man and X-Men) and frankly, a better film.

I was listening to the NPR Pop-Culture Happy Hour and they had a segment on the most defining pieces of media for the Summer. No one mentioned Godzilla.

Now, by itself this is not really that big of a deal, but I look back and feel like Godzilla 2014 was kind of a flash in the pan and then didn't have much staying power in the collective conscious.

I feel like (most) people will remember 2014 for Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men (and maybe Transformers). Godzilla on the other hand will be glossed over.

They mention Planet of the Apes, by any chance? That was the best movie of the summer, for my money.

To be fair to Boyhood, which I haven't seen, the number one piece of praise I continually see heaped on it is how ambitious it is. There's nothing even remotely false about that statement. It was filmed over a period of 12 years so that the actors and actresses all aged in real-time throughout the film. That's SUPER ambitious.

I don't think superheroics had anything to do with it. People paid to see "Godzilla" starring Bryan Cranston based on the trailers and the TV commercials. Instead they got "The MUTO Movie" starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson with special guests Godzilla and Bryan Cranston. Most moviegoers weren't even expecting additional monsters in the first place and the average joe can't distinguish a MUTO from the Cloverfield monster, yet they are unquestionably the star monsters of this picture.

If Godzilla had the most scenes and screentime of any monster in the film, and if the ads let people know to expect other monsters going in, most general moviegoers would have walked away satisfied having gotten what they paid to see. Switching around Cranston and Taylor-Johnson's respective prominence in the story would have satisfied most everybody else.


Now that I think about it, the role of the monsters in this movie is basically the same as in Mothra vs. Godzilla, with Godzilla taking Mothra's role and the MUTOs taking Godzilla's 1964 role. The movie starts out by providing backstory for the protagonist monster, then the majority of the film's monster scenes are devoted to the antagonist, but the protagonist monster still emerges triumphant in the end and peacefully swims home.

First sorry but I wouldn't pay much attention to any NPR programs, outside of BBC news there culture segments are often downright embarrassing, especially on nerd topics.

But to loosely address what you guys are talking about-Godzilla was promoted as the 54 type Godzilla STARRING Bryan Cranston in the trailers, media, etc. Every interview had to go through that tired "He's Japans answer to America bombing Hiroshima/analogy" they bring out when they want to boost Godzillas depth, highlight the "dark edgy nolan" crap. What we got was a Godzilla of the late 60s 70s and the destruction in the trailers were actually MUTO related. He in essence was more Kaneko Gamera than 54 by a mile. Having said that I loved it. Hero Godzilla is a HUGE part of his appeal and look at how many movies and how many of us fell in love with this version as a kid. Saw it 3 times and virtually every time people clapped at the end when that "king of the monsters" thing was on the big screen.

And as to the movies relevance to the summer b.o. I dont give a rip how it performed-to me it was one of the true fun blockbusters like a Spielberg film and not say the mindless TMNT fake blockbusters they shlep to us to sell toys. And it didn't have the obvious "were making a franchise forget about telling a coherent story" that Spidey 2 did.

Hey guys, just wanted to update you that the movie has crossed the ever important $200,661,000 mark domestically.

So Godzilla made 25 mil in Japan...not too shabby. I'm curious how that compares with previous G films?

Are those adjusted for inflation? Also wondering about ticket sales.

A lot of sites have rough estimates for Godzilla 2000 ($15 million), Megaguirus ($10 million) and GMK ($20 million).

It seems that they're mostly quoting Toho Kingdom on that. Not that I necessarily doubt them as their info seems to have been recorded way back when these movies were released, but a more exact number would be interesting for comparison purposes.
