Just saw a super-cool TV spot featuring Serizawa's "We call him... Gojira" speech.

Godzilla got badly outpaced by Pacific Rim in the Korean box office. I don't think that bodes well for the box-office smash we're hoping for in the East Asian market, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Not sure if this was posted yet but.....

Godzilla': 5 Things Roland Emmerich's 1998 Version Did Better Than The 2014 Version

Get your pitch forks ready for the guy that wrote the article above! But in all honest there are SOME valid point there. But I do tend to disagree with the majority of all the points listed in the article except for 1. Very true that Matthew Broderick seemed to have a much more charismatic and larger presence in the film than Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Having a comedic lead in a Godzilla movie was a bad idea to start with though. I don't care if Broderick was more "charismatic." Just means that he was a more charismatic piece of trash than the other pieces of trash.

The Memorial Day Weekend box office take was 28% lower than last year...so, yeah, Godzilla fell off...but other than X-Men, nobody went to see ANYTHING this weekend, and people didn't even turn out HUGELY for X-Men...It did worse than Godzilla from Friday through Sunday. I don't know what that means, I think it's just kinda weird/interesting. Godzilla fell off, but nobody went to the movies at all.

I had no idea about that o_o. Do you have any link on that mr Jelly? Nice to know, though I doubt it'll change the minds of the doom and gloom crowd.

I stand corrected then. But I still don't see the reason to be all worried about this :?

For several things 1) The movie is still making good money, 2) it went up against X-Men the following week which had a lot of the same demographics, 3) The movie hasn't opened in China yet, and finally 4) It's completely out of our hands

Yeah, it's nothing to worry about really, though after the dizzying success on week one it's kind of a letdown to see the movie slump to the point where initial projections for its final domestic total look more accurate than the revised ones based on opening weekend. And I have much less faith in the Chinese box office than a lot of others here, but, as you said, it's not in our control anyway. I did my part with all the times I saw it, anyway.

With this precipitous drop in BO performance you think WB might take back what they said earlier about sequels and delay that prospect for the time being?

^Probably not. It's done better than anyone expected to do, and unless things go horribly, horribly wrong it'll be categorized as an solid success story.

Actually, the movie has done quite well, considering it is going against what one would deem “a sure bet”. This is not a super hero pic. This is not a supernational / sci-fi teenagers-in-love flick. This is not SW or Star Trek or that one raunchy comedy critics seem to love once a year. It is not Pixar or some other animated feature. It is a giant monster film and one of the few that is becoming quite profitable.

I don't think anything Taylor-Johnson did was as bad as what was going on in Godzilla 1998.

An actor can only be as good as the material he's given to work with. Max Borenstein's script was weak, at best, full of plot holes, and had tons of contrived, expositionary dialogue. Wooden scripts tend to result in wooden acting. Cranston's part was massaged by Frank Darabont, and while BC ain't no slouch when it comes to acting, he obviously had better stuff to work with. I've caught a couple of ATJ's movies now and the man CAN act. He's no Anthony Hopkins, but he can emote. I would lay some blame on Edwards still being a bit green around the gills, but Cranston's part sort of negates that conclusion. Still, I did enjoy the film for what it was, but it certainly could have been better. In addition to the Brody family re-uniting aspect, which was good too, I agree with others here who mentioned that the focus should have included interaction between Cranston, Serizawa and Stenz. Those guys would have made for a very interesting story dynamic.

And as I've wrote elsewhere, the sequels really need better scripts (in addition to ramped up monster action) to be successful and do more than just spike big and then fade away, especially if they intend to turn this into an ongoing franchise. I honestly feel that the unexpectedly large initial box office returns for this film are due to the draw that Godzilla has. He is NOT box office poison, as some nitwit wrote. People LOVE the big guy. He just needs a high level of quality around him and things will be fine. People LOVE to fantasize about things that could never happen in the real world. Dinosaurs are always a guaranteed high-interest topic. With the right creative forces behind Godzilla, it could be as good as Marvel's recent cinematic product, as long as a top-notch writer & director are used. Hell, IF they make it to film #3 and it is an Amierican version of Destroy All Monsters there's no reason why it couldn't be almost as succesful as AVENGERS, provided the folks behind-the-scenes turn out first-rate material. However, if they stoop to cut-rate writers and cookie-cutter lowball FX without any focus or heart then it will quickly spiral into just another dumbed down, headache-inducing Bay-fest.
