The feet are the biggest deviation from the traditional Godzilla design, far more than the gills... yet I really like them. I've tried to think through exactly why I like them and came up with a few reasons:
-They remind me of my favorite kaiju feet, Gamera's in G3.
-The 'trunk' feet, because of elephants and the brachiosaurus in JP (a big moment in movie history for my generation), leads to the feeling of immense weight and power, whereas the elongated T-Rex/GINO feet suggest fleet footed and svelte creatures. Remember how central the feet were in GINO's advertising? Wouldn't be surprised if this was a deliberate getting away from that.
-Since the paleontological science that shaped Godzilla's original design is way out of date, the idea that Godzilla's deliberately doesn't look like an actual dinosaur appeals to me. He's a chimera, with features from different creatures that hasn't occurred in nature. So we have what is ostensibly a bipedal predator dinosaur with an enormous mass, dragging tail, and the feet of a quadruped. That's also why I like the gills.
