I think the success of World War Z, The Walking Dead and the Nolan Batman pictures indicate that the audience is there for a "gloom and doom" stories. Provided, of course, that there is a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. Humanity triumphing against the odds.

The scope, spectacle, shock and sheer horror of giant monsters destroying a city was somewhat absent in this picture. It felt more like a sequel to a Godzilla movie that already happened.

Again, not trying to tear it down, just trying to understand the huge drop.

If someone has mentioned this before forgive me, but this summer is very frontloaded. Each of the big movies faced a 60%+ drop the week after and there's only so much money to go around for these big event movies sandwiched into a single month. I feel as though the summer's biggest films cannibalized one another by being so close.

I simply think it's due to their being too many big budget action movies each summer. Every weekend a new, big-budget movie comes out. Those that want to see it go out the first weekend. Those that were on the fence are quickly distracted by the next big budget movie.

GODZILLA will hit 179+ tomorrow. Will need only 1 million more to be profitable!

Like I said after I first watched it on the 16th.... CHEERS to a successful reboot!!!!

GODZILLA also has a chance to double its opening of 93 to 186 after the weekend numbers come in.

Godzilla's not alone in the world of huge dropoffs from week 1 to week 2. X-Men dropped by 64%. And I don't think there's any negative word of mouth on that one...

I think the problem is that nothing coming out lately seems different or fresh. And certainly not "must-see".

Spider-Man and X-Men are both well-worn franchises.

Godzilla had all of the makings of something unique, a true event picture (as evidenced by it opening higher than the above two, despite being a non-sequel). But it wound up being a traditional superhero movie, albeit one with a giant monster.

I still think people bought a ticket expecting The Walking Dead, The Dark Knight or Game of Thrones of giant monster movies. Instead they got Thor or Captain America, and word-of-mouth said to just wait for Redbox.

$200 mil is nothing to sneeze at, and we're getting a sequel, so no complaints.

Godzilla hit $380 Million worldwide today!

*Throws Confetti!*

I'm hearing that Godzilla's expected to bring in about $6.2 Million this weekend, which should put us at or a little above $185 Million domestically. If the movie made at least $15 Million from international markets over the last week, I think we might top $400 Million by Sunday night. ^_^

GODZILLA has taken just under 6m for the weekend, and has barely crossed 185. We'll have its international update later on today. Hopefully we can hit 400m worldwide before the start of the new week.

Yikes... It had completely died in current overseas territories. Only made 8m through the week and weekend overseas. Were lucky it still has China and Japan left.

The collection of international box office numbers is always slow after the first week, they're probably a week to week and a half behind now on average (really the numbers are all arriving at different rates so that's only a rough guide).

Such a long wait for the Japan release..
Does piracy take the air out of the film..or does piracy lead to people wanting to see the spectacle on the big screen.....
I'm just curious if there's positive buzz for the upcoming debut or indifference.

They're not current. Take a look at the Foreign tab at Box Office Mojo, you find the dates for the most recent updates for box office numbers of June 1st for most countries. South Korea, Russia, Aregentina haven't been updated since May 25th, and India's numbers haven't been updated since May 18th.
