I think the problem is that nothing coming out lately seems different or fresh. And certainly not "must-see".
Spider-Man and X-Men are both well-worn franchises.
Godzilla had all of the makings of something unique, a true event picture (as evidenced by it opening higher than the above two, despite being a non-sequel). But it wound up being a traditional superhero movie, albeit one with a giant monster.
I still think people bought a ticket expecting The Walking Dead, The Dark Knight or Game of Thrones of giant monster movies. Instead they got Thor or Captain America, and word-of-mouth said to just wait for Redbox.
$200 mil is nothing to sneeze at, and we're getting a sequel, so no complaints.
