I don't remember the location of the video, but there was an interview with Edwards at the SD Comic Con and he was asked whether his film would be related to any of the older films and his reply was that this is an "origin" film.

So that being said, to me it doesn't sound like this will be a sequel to the original film. I'm not saying 1954 won't be a plot point in the film, I just don't see this movie being a sequel.

And besides, I'm sick of seeing direct sequels to the original film, we saw enough of that with the Millenium films.

Enough films have 'rebooted' the franchise in recent memory that my preference is still Godzilla being a somewhat established monster in the new universe. Having Godzilla appear for the first time in 2014 just 'feels' wrong, given the history of the character. It doesn't necessarily have to be handled as a sequel, but 'The Return of Godzilla,' GxM, GMK, GxMG, and Final Wars all had a plot element that tied this 'new' version of Godzilla to the Original. It's kind of become a trope with the franchise in recent memory, and I don't see why it can't work in this series either. (I mean, it's not like Godzilla is born in French Polynesia, only to somehow swim through the Panama Canal only to end up in New York....at least San Francisco and Japan share an Ocean).

I think thematically it could fit in as well: Cold War/Nuclear concerns have abated, but this recklessness of Man and his defiance of Nature continue to cause Monsters to appear to put Man back in his place. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but that's the 'themes' I'm hearing from Mr. Edwards.

Also, despite being an Origin piece, I still think there are ways to make homages or references to the original film. Maybe in this franchise the Japanese Fishing Fleet was attacked, an a monster was rumored to have attacked Oto Island during a Typhoon (flashback scene), but was never conclusively confirmed, and a Dr. Yamane was never able to find validation for his theories in the larger scientific community... This is just an example but I think it CAN work, and I also don't think it's impossible given Mr. Edwards publicly stated admiration for the first film.

I want to say, "Alright Spiderdouche prepared to be upstaged..."

But I can't imagine the trailer is going to be very different from what we have seen already. I know we don't want spoilers, but if I could just see that foot smash down from the airport scene, I'd be so happy.

One could make a strong argument that rebooting Batman, Superman, Spider-man, Freddy, Jason or Michael Myers is stupid, because the characters are already known to the public, and generally well understood in terms of their origins and motivations.

Whether people have seen the original Godzilla or not, they've probably been exposed to one of the 28 sequels or reboots thus far, and even more so, they've been exposed to the concept itself through countless parodies and homages. The idea of Godzilla as an invincible dinosaur that repeatedly attacks Japan throughout history is so deeply ingrained in the American mind, that I can't fathom how some of you think a full reboot or origin story is actually necessary in this case.

I think this is a case where they could very easily tie this film to the 1954 film, having that as the beginning of something that up until 2014, has only been "Japan's problem".

People WAY over-estimate the number of people who've seen a Japanese Godzilla film.

ESPECIALLY from the target audience of this particular upcoming film, which will be males age 12-18 (I'm not saying the movie won't appeal to other audiences...I'm just saying, that's one of the two markets that ALL studios would like to really rope in - the other being tweenage girls - because they spend the most money and go to repeat viewings most often).

So apparently, we are about to end phase one – Complaining about lack of a trailer.

Now we are about to go into phase two – Complaining about the trailer!

Just think of the first Tim Burton batman movie: It starts right in the middle of Batman's career. The first movie does NOT have to be a long, drawn-out origin story for the main character. This has actually been a problem with a lot of modern Superhero movies. Sure people haven't seen a lot of Godzilla movies, doesn't mean that collectively people don't know that Godzilla exists as a character franchise. I think you are selling awareness short. You can make nods to the original film that pleases fans enough, and intrigues this new audience into looking at previous films.

That guy on IMDB is probably lying. I prompted him to e-mail me a screenshot of the trailer and this is what he sent, expecting me to believe him.

In his descriptions, he described the 2nd leaked trailer scene for scene. So we either get the same trailer, or he is being a goose trolling the IMDB forums. He also expects me to come back and admit I was wrong when the trailer comes up... so if the new trailer is what we have seen already... lol. I had a good laugh.

I'm too lazy to look, but I'm pretty sure someone said the time for that second leaked trailer doesn't match up with the information about the new one. True?

Ya I'm all over the place. I suck. Like I said, I love messing with people when they claim they know something. I can't help myself but play with them.

I'm pretty sure that if that trailer was at any theater in the country, it would of been recorded and uploaded. It is a pretty coveted piece of media at the moment in geek world.

Probably will hear about the original attack as it was presented in Godzilla Returns the novel. Maybe there will be a references to the Oxygen Destroyer, at the G. Encounter there was stuff about Serizawa and from the teasers there another teaser involving him.

Why can't it be a soft sequel. It doesn't have to explicitly show clips of the 54 Godzilla like Godzilla 1985 but it could say he made an appearance in 1954, he was thought to be destroyed after the Japanese used an experimental weapon, and that his radiation signatures match those of atomic bomb tests among the bikini atoll in the 1950s. I feel like Godzilla's origin story is just as important as Batman, Superman, Frankenstein and other famous icons. A two minute bit of throw away dialogue explaining this could also free up the run time other wise you have scientists trying to analyze where Godzilla came from and every other giant monster trope that's been done to death since the 1950s. I don't see what would be the problem with that?
