I've always felt that the Godzilla theme used out of the context of an Ifukube score was a little too jarring. However, if the composer can draw inspiration from, and re-imagine an Ifukube sound, I have no reason to think it wont work.

Twelve of the Japanese Godzilla movies don't feature the traditional Akira Ifukube theme for the character, including two of the Ifukube-scored films (the original Godzilla and Terror of Mechagodzilla). That theme is great but it's not a necessity.

I have feelings about people who have feelings about the design...and they basically amount to wondering if these people have seen more of the design than I have, because I've only seen a couple of glimpses in a proof-of-concept trailer, and shaky-cam footage of another glimpse from a non-finalized version...

Personally I don't mind if the theme isn't there. As much as I love Ifukube's score for Goji, and think it's iconic for the character, as said before here, its missing from nearly half of the films. And if I remember correctly it was added to the credits of G2k in the american version only.

There's some great themes that are really under represented. I was pleased with the inclusion of the GvMG theme in Final Wars (during the artic scene on the radio the gentlemen have in the office). The KKvG title theme (original) was likewise awesome and thankfully replayed in the credits for Destroyah (though the horrid dub removed that entire sequence). MZ march does get replayed quite often (though it was developed form the original's movie theme), SoG's fight theme even made a come back for King Seesar's battle with MG but that was the same composer (Important to remember Sato scored 4 if not 5 films).

Then there's the GxM, GxMG and Tokyo SOS composer Oshima. Ko Otani who did the Hesei Gamera films as well as GMK. Hattori did the themes for Space Godzilla and G2k , which as I was trying to remember one last week kept getting it confused with the other discovering just how similar they were , and of course learning today they shared a composer. And the last Godzilla theme we heard in Final Wars.

Not to forget Banno worked with Manabe on GvsHedorah, and while I dont expect to hear that theme or his Megaro in the movie, apparently Manabe recently composed the score for a documintary on Ms Oshima, and her's I could see. Though I like many am expecting a more G85/Godzilla Return's theme.

Ifukube was the iconic and best Godzilla composer no doubt. But when even his own collection is so broad its a shame when you dont hear some of his best works like the FCTW title theme or the Volcano theme from the Mitsubishi Pavillion (which became the title track for Gigan). It will be the 100th anniversary of his birth 2 weeks after the US release of the film, so I would definitely not be opposed to his themes being in the movie. I would just hope they do something special with it like the mix he made for the Godzilla vs. Destroyah Credits, and not just recycle the same main theme we've heard as the sole Ifukube theme in every non Ifukube Scored Goji flick since the Hesei period began (save the MZ march in GvB and GMK)

I could see them putting the march in there if not only to differentiate it from gino.

^ thanks. Yeah a medley would be perfect at some point in the movie or credits. And yeah I'm kind of partial to the Space goji theme. Even hummed it in my head while visiting fukuoka tower. For whatever reason (nostalgia probably and the fact that my tape from 94 came with a preview of GGOTU and i originally saw both that way) it and Gamera 95 are the only kaiju films I watch when I go to the old summer home for a week. Its become somewhat of biennial tradition. The G2K theme bored me at first but may have grown on me as a result of its similarity in obscure cues with added depth, though both I realize from an objective perspective are far inferior to kuroku's 84 score or even Oshima's mire scores.

^ thanks. The page also says "Keen to see the new 'Godzilla?' Think the cast will fare well alongside a 400-foot+ fire-breathing lizard? Let us know in the comments."
Can we take that as confirmation he's over 400ft tall this time? Maybe something Edwards said off the record. We know he's going to be bigger than ever. This would make him even bigger than Space Godzilla. Maybe they just guessed or read it off the back of the Kotm box that had it wrong back when he was only 50m though.
