From DHD today...

"Godzilla looks right now to be the first film in history to open to over $90M and not hit $200M. As of its last reporting, it had $198M on 352 screens. Its ww gross is $498.5M."

I doubt that, when people were hoping this movie would be one for the record books, that this is what they had in mind. :|

Ah well, at least I have an incredibly specific piece of trivia committed to memory.

There's really no point in quelling over the "what could have been, what should have been". A Godzilla movie is what it is. Either a person likes them and have always liked them or they don't. It's very clear because of that there are limits to how well a movie of this kind does or doesn't do.

I think it'll hit 200... But not 201.

I have at least two theaters near me that are playing the film still. I think that WB might keep it out long enough for it to hit that mark and then pull the film out. I plan on seeing the movie again this Wednesday.. Can't care what anyone says, I love this movie! :)

Yeah, it had a nice jump. It'll pass 200m and MAYBE a shot at 201.

I just noticed the film has gone to the dollar theaters. It's got two screens on mine: one 2D and the theater's only 3D screen.

I just noticed something pretty interesting. Last week I remember Godzilla being about number 24 on the weekend charts, but this week it has jumped to number 22! Wow that's pretty awesome! :D

Check it out

Yeah its doubled what it did the previous weekend and is its best performing weekend since Independence Day. 200M+ and outperforming Superman Returns to be Legendary's 9th highest grossing film of all time seems certain. I think domestically it will outperform Armageddon's 201M to become the 7th highest grossing disaster film and get close to WWZ's 202 million +. All depends when its run ends.

Since it was ranked 20th as of Sunday  , and Spiderman is still in theaters we'll have until at least August I presume. But the weird thing about spiderman which has been in theaters 80 days as opposed to Divergent which was in theaters for over 100 (won't get on the Lego Movie since animated successes are in another category despite already being out on DVD) is Box Office mojo shows it as being only in theaters on the weekends since Independence weekend. Is that typical during blockbuster season or just what happens when it hits dollar theaters or some weird type of tabulating their doing to save energy? Obviously it's playing during the week somewhere until its run ends.

Speaking of runs ending, anyone notice Godzilla the Japanese original had its highest grossing 2 days in over a month last Thursday and Friday? Even though it didnt play last Saturday or Sunday it was still in the top 90 for the weekend..I guess thats impressive. It could well make 150k if they keep it in theaters.

I wish it would have made it to 100m in China... But TF4 just destroyed everything there once released. It probably would have made around 85 if TF4 wasn't in the equation.

Japan will be interesting... It can make at anywhere from only 10m to as high as 100m there depending how its received there. I'm thinking like 30m. Japan seems to like higher end G films.. GMK did well, and of course G98.

So, it looks like these dollar theaters saved the day, but not surprised at all. I've been to my fair share, and lots of people attend them and for some, it is actually the first time watching these movies. Why pay a double-digit sum when one can wait and watch it for cheaper and still get the same entertainment value (which is what I sometimes do).

Not to beat a dead horse, but I think this goes back to the weak WOM.

Audiences are still intrigued by this picture, and seeing this character, they just saw the feedback and decided they'd rather not shell out $10 for it.
