Considering the pre-release hype for this film, the trailers, marketing, etc. Then to include these elements in the film only to be embodied by the main opposition to Godzilla is a huge misstep. I don't care if the entire narrative still hits on these elements, if you are going to include an anti-nuclear message in this picture and then all but divorce Godzilla of that element in order to prop him up as a sympathetic character for audiences to root for, you have seriously missed the mark. Sanitizing the character is an apt criticism. I don't care if the movie got it as a whole, thinking big picture: Godzilla cannot embody these elements going forward without some major back-peddling.[/quote]

When hasn't this been done before? The anti-nuclear massage is not exclusive to Godzilla. Also, when was the last time you saw a Godzilla movie with family or friends and they didn't root for him when fighting other monsters (except perhaps Mothra)? Sanitizing? Hardly.

So, basically you're saying Godzilla is a product of the bomb and I'm saying he's a product of nature. The result is still the same. It was a wake up call not just to Godzilla but to the MUTOS. Any likeness to the original Godzilla was in the serious approach and not lighthearted fare instead. What we got was not the dark, brooding Godzilla of '54. We got the hero G and I'm just as happy with that one as I am the original. They all are Godzilla. No less, no more. By the way people DO want to see more monster battles and they DO want Godzilla to win.

I like that Godzilla's the hero again. I could have done with the anti-hero or villain incarnation that's been common since the '80s, but I grew up with hero-zilla. He's like an old friend. They did an excellent job of positioning him as a hero without anthropomorphizing him, keeping him a radioactive doom-beast but explaining why he's our only hope against the many other monsters that will inevitably threaten the hell out of everything. He's also a much easier character to build a franchise around, as shown by the Showa series and illustrated by the relative awkwardness of the Heisei and Millenium series.

And I don't think the Sekizawa/Tsuburaya Godzilla is in any way less valid a character than the Honda/Tanaka one.

Triple Post.

1. If you are fine with Godzilla not having a nuclear allegory, that's fine. I can be okay with that too, and it's like that in a lot of films.

2. I think it's pretty indefensible to say that Godzilla (as a character) in the film has strong nuclear relevance, especially compared to the heavy handiness of the MUTOs nuclear messaging.

3. If you are going to make a movie that has such a strong anti nuclear bent, and honestly, it's stronger than this nature restoring balance message, and you don't make it about Godzilla, I'm going to take issue with it. If you are then going to make Godzilla strive to destroy monsters that incorporate elements of the original messaging to such a strong level, it's going to seriously knock down this fim's credibility.

Seriously, in the almost 2 months since this movie has come out, it went from a #6 on my favorites lists for most complaints levied against the film to a #10 or #11 slot simply based on this artistic decision.

Guys, what if Godzilla killed off the MUTOs because they were his natural enemies? That wasnt really a question.... In the sequel, he makes humanity pay. He eliminates the MUTOs because they are his threat.. Now he can make humanity suffer in the sequel. That's until a new foe arrives. Godzilla was too tired and worn out at the end too do anything. However, he does recognize the good in people.. Ford for example.

There, everyone's happy now.

Your GODZILLA 2 idea Ben is a bit fan fictiony, but its the basic idea of how I can see Godzilla as a menace/natural beast/balance restorer. I personally want another new monster with a classic.
