The domestic gross is what gives me a chub.

$38 million. If it has a 10% drop Saturday, that'll be round about $34-35 million. Then if it can pull in another $22 million or so on Sunday, it'll have the biggest weekend opening of the entire YEAR!!!!!

Saw the film again last night, I felt it was even stronger with a second viewing.

I think the acting and story were just fine. Yeah it would have been nice for Cranston to stick around but then I think of the films that done the same with their actors, regardless of the quality of the movie.

I still think AJT was good and all those worries about his accent was for a line of dialogue that wasn't even in the film. More than likely it was cut or just recorded for the trailer.

However I do see and understand the points some were making about him and certain characters, but for me it all works.

The MUTOS ended up being much more fearsome and a worthy opponent for Godzilla. I admit the initial descriptions and toys weren't that impressive but once they were on screen, they delivered.

I love the score and it works well within the film, my only gripe is that the haunting choral piece used at the beginning when Serizawa is flying in to the mine isn't on the soundtrack. But that's a common issue with film scores, the AFM fees would make it too expensive to include on the disc.

I can't wait to see what the future holds for Godzilla and Gareth Edwards.

Man, apparently the EMP blast by the MUTOS has been wreaking havoc with many theaters.....that's some heavy duty special effects!!! LOL

Clearly some people accidentally bought tickets to those new 4-D showings, where the Muto's EMP attacks actually fry the projectors and that's the end of the showing.

EDIT: Beaten to it. :P

The 4-D showings should be avoided, because you'll be exposed to massive amounts of radiation.

I suppose the marketing campaign paid off...good reviews and word of mouth pulled people who were on the fence.....good deal.

In discussing Godzilla I hope a few kind words are also thrown in to get Pacific Rim a little more attention as well

I have to admit I was wrong about Godzilla's name cachet. I remember saying, back in 2009 that the name carried a bit more infamy than notoriety and that it wasn't really enough on its own to get people into theaters.

Now, while the advertising campaign did show Bryan Cranston, and Aaron Taylor Johnson, and Elizabeth Olsen, it was never like:
"Bryan Cranston, Star of BREAKING BAD"
"Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Rising star from the Kick-Ass series"
"And Juliette Binoche, Academy Award Winning Actress"

It was just: "GODZILLA". So yeah, I stand corrected. Much to my delight.

I think the movie is doing so well because it really did have a solid ad campaign. You couldn't turn on the TV without seeing Godzilla ads. I know a bunch of people said they didn't see ads in theaters (I never did, but I don't got to the theaters often enough to know if there were no ads or it was just me), but in this day and age when its basically considered the golden age of television, maybe putting all the money into DOZENS of TV ads on DOZENS of stations was the right move.
There were also billboards placed in prominent movie billboard ad places like Times Square and around LA and stuff.
Last year, when I told people I was excited for Pacific Rim, the almost UNIVERSAL response I got was, "What's that?"
This year, when I told people I was excited for Godzilla, it was much more resoundingly, "Oh YEAH, I've been seeing the previews" Even if these people weren't actively excited, they were well aware of the movie's existence.

My major problem with the fans/people complaining about how they wanted a villain/anti-hero goji is that over the past 30 years, all the Godzilla's have been either villains or anti-heroes. We have not had a super hero goji in 40 years. I know a lot of people want a dark/serious Godzilla movie because some people believe that = legitimacy in the eyes of the public. But as this movie shows, a good guy super hero goji can be a raging success if he is in a well crafted, entertaining movie. Let us enjoy this since hero godzilla is far rarer than the antihero/villain Godzilla. As long as the movie is successful and represents the character well, then who cares?

They have done a good job marketing this movie. It seems everywhere I go online, I see Godzilla ads.

I think brand recognition also plays a role. When I told people about Pacific Rim last year, a lot of them replied "What's that?" You hear about a movie called Godzilla, there's not much doubt what the movie is going to be about.

Went and saw this last night in a psudeo-IMAX theater something called a GDX screen which is 70'. The theater was pretty packed about 75% full give or take. On a side note though while we where standing in line nearly everyone was buying tickets either for the GDX 3D screening (the screening I saw) or the standard 2D screening and this was about 20+ people in line. Little old ladies bought tickets for this movie!!!! Now on to the movie.

I thought it was simply amazing. Is it the best Godzilla film I've ever seen? No but it's pretty damn close, this is how GINO SHOULD have been! Garreth did an amazing job in fact he put the God back in Godzilla. The movies where interesting monsters glad to see some more insect like creatures in the series. Godzilla showed both human traits and was animalistic at the same time and the final battle was one of the best fights in a Godzilla movie I've ever seen. In fact during the money shot; the atomic kiss the entire audience started clapping, that's something I've never expierenced in a movie as far as I can remember. Even at the end people clapped.

Overall I'd give Godzilla a 9.0 and look forward to the sequels that will most likely spawn for it's success.
