1. How does Godzilla get his name?

2. What is Godzilla in this story? A dinosaur? Something else?

How can Godzilla be anything other than a dinosaur? Not to attack you, but what would you call him? He can't be a lizard. His body resembles theropod dinosaurs too much not be one.

Godzilla being atomic/nuclear in nature is far far far far more important than his being a prehistoric creature.

That being said, it seems the prehistoric stuff is still in the origin for the new movie, so the point is moot.

I could be ok with Godzilla not being a dinosaur as long as he is a PREHISTORIC amphibious intermediary creature. He could be one of the last surviving creatures of what dinosaurs were going to become. After all some dinosaurs escaped to the skies and became birds to escape the extinction. What if Godzilla's ancestors escaped to the ocean depths to survive? It'd explain his massive size.

My serious preference for any Godzilla origin is not to go in depth trying to explain it. It's better to remain more mysterious, especially in a first outing than it is to spend screen time saying, "Okay, now this is exactly how is breath works and here's how he can breathe underwater, etc."

Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and Gojira did it well: They postulated on the origin coming from the age of dinosaurs, a nuke woke him up, and now humanity is screwed.

So glad you all are using spoiler tags. Clicked in here by mistake.
Anyway Godzilla's genesis should be primordial. Never considered G as a theropod
or from any other family of dinosaur. Think his origin may be even more
ancient.
