Thanks for the clarification.
I guess I must have missed that skull.

As I was actively avoiding any and all spoilers for the movie, before I saw it, so I missed any IGN stuff.
I don't really like their site that much anyways.
They seem to be stuck-up about everything, and I suspect they get kickbacks to review WWE games in a positive light.

I'm not a hero. I'm not a savior. Forget what you know.

I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control.

This video gives a pretty good over-view of issues with this movie, in a pretty hilarious way:

The whole Hawaii sequence for Ford would have been much more meaningful if instead of Akio and his parents, it was Ford's wife & son. Ford's whole interaction with Akio is built on idea of "this could be my son", so why wasn't the decision made while writing the script for it to be Ford's son on the train with him during the MUTO attack.

It's not like it would have been difficult to do; just a couple tweak to Ford's line after he gets the call that his dad is jail "Elle, since I'm going to Japan to get dad, why don't you and Sam pack up and fly out to Hawaii and we'll meet you two there." That's it, Elle and Sam are in place for the attack in Hawaii and Ford gets to actually interact with his family.

If it were me, I wouldn't go to Hawaii. There are responsibilities at home to take care of. Also, it's not often that military personnel have spouses that drop everything and jump on a plane to hook up half way across the globe. How impractical and illogical.

It need not be a case of dropping everything on the spur of the moment, Elle would have known when Ford would be arriving home for several weeks at a minimum. With Ford coming back from an overseas assignment, it makes perfect sense for Elle to have taken at least a few days off after Ford had been gone for months.

Though my example line was more a sudden suggestion, the trip could easily and more sensibly be a previously arranged family vacation in Hawaii.

I think the key takeaway is that Ford was just a lackluster character whose involvement in most scenes was contrived.

Yes, most popcorn movies are contrived. But the best make you forget about it. Put a young Will Smith in the role and nobody would be complaining.

I've gone on the record as saying I like G14.

However, if I were to make any changes, I think I would have kept Joe alive until later in the film. It would have easily served to bring out more from Serizawa and his Assistant Vivienne Graham since they would have much to discuss. Also, I would have probably dropped Olsen/Elle from the script all together. There's literally nothing for her to do and she's basically there to stir up some emotion and get in the way of the monsters as they attack the city. She's a very talented actress, but her character doesn't do much. I also would have focused on the strained relationship between Ford and Joe rather than keep Elle (and their son) around.

Lastly, I think Edwards needs to lay off the hide and seek/tease idea. Though I appreciate the sentiment, the build up to the first appearance of Godzilla was perfectly done and there was no true payoff when he fights Muto. I think Edwards did a great job making such huge creatures interact with humans, but at the same time I did want more Godzilla. I go back and forth with this, but I think the sequels need more of the monsters to be more successful at the box office.

^ I like this. Alternatively, I think they could splice in Steve Oedekerk's scenes from Kung Pow:

[Female MUTO bears down on Ford, who's on the boat]
[cut to Chosen One]
"I'll take a pound of nuts."
"Available for your home in 1995, only on Nintendo Ultra 64!"

All kidding aside, this movie needed a touch of ID4.

-Charismatic lead to provide both levity and connection.

-Multiple characters to convey the scope of the destruction.

-Rousing battle speech (which this one had in David Stratharin's, but it was cut)

-Jeff Goldblum (not necessary, though he does make everything better)

Man, too bad Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin had such distain for the character. Back in the halcyon 90's they really could've done something fun.

ID4 is overrated. Devlin and Emmerich's hackery is on full display, but it was fresher at the time and got a pass.

In other semi-related news, a "Let Them Fight" chant broke out on last night's RAW.

I'd love to see this become a thing during sporting events, say, anytime the refs hold up a play.

I seriously doubt it had anything to do with Godzilla. Let them fight chants when two people are being held apart in wrestling are far older than May 2014.

Nor did I claim it was because of Godzilla. "Let Them Fight" is just a ton 'o' fun to say.

But Google search "Let Them Fight" and the first thing you'll see is a big, mean, Permian, a$$-stomping b@stard.

Amazon is out of the DVD til the 19th.

Legendary could have a bonafide blockbuster on their hands with the sequel if they play their cards right. No more hiding Godzilla - just make it more of a straight up monster flick with Edwards' ability to bring in creative POV shots during the battle scenes.

The more I watch this movie and get used to the flaws the less they bother me. Just finished watching the blu ray and I still love the film and the design just keeps getting better the more I am exposed to it.

I expect a lot of complaints will disappear over time. It's natural for fans to analyze and dissect new products and it's more rare than not for it to be flawless. It can be told that most fans here are never happy and in some cases, rightfully so.
