Godzilla was a big unknown up until the first marketing started to appear. Then all of a sudden the conversation changed to "Wow, that looks pretty good".
That optimism is reflected in the $93 million opening weekend, and especially the $38 million opening day (still the biggest for the year). I still think the movie turned out to not be what audiences were expecting, hence the lukewarm (though not bad) WOM. Had this been the "must-see" movie event the trailers were depicting, I think we'd see a much higher gross. But this is all hypothetical.
A $200 million domestic haul, and $500 million international, with a sequel on the way, should have us Godzilla fans dancing in the street. Godzilla is relevant again. That's what we wanted. He may not be dominating the pop culture conversation...but that's for the sequel.
