GODZILLA: King of the Monsters (5-31-19 -NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

This is good news. Godzilla 2 needed to get away from Transformers 6 and Warner Bros. has moved it to the same late March slot they gave to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This does mean that it will be just under five years between Legendary's first two Godzilla installments, which is quite a wait, but not only do we have Godzilla: Resurgence coming from Japan in the meantime, this will actually give Toho time to produce a sequel of their own for a 2018 release. Plus, next year, Skull Island!

So I now have to wait until a few months before I turn 40 before Godzilla 2 comes out. Way to make me feel the cold kiss of mortality, Warner Bros.

This film could go into development hell (which it probably is) for all I care. The Godzilla series rests in a madman's hands, and that's the way I like it.

Well it's certainly a bummer that's it's pushed back another year, but this is probably a good thing. For one, it's not up against Transformers or any other major blockbuster (so far), and second it will give Edwards enough time and breathing room turn turn out a good film instead of a rush job.

And best of all, Godzilla Vs Kong will be out the following year! So this probably confirms that Edwards will not direct Godzilla Vs Kong, but instead may direct Godzilla 3.

But my wish is for Del Toro to direct Godzilla Vs Kong

It sucks we have to wait longer, but I agree with having Godzilla avoid Transformers. That franchise just doesn't make sense. They are some of the worse movies out there, and they make a crapton of money. We also have Toho's Godzilla to make the wait more bearable. Hopefully.

I need some time to let it sink in, but for now, I'm not happy to hear that Edwards might be out. I'm not sure who I'd want to replace him, either. I saw someone suggesting they get Jan de Bont, as a kind of recompense for the Sony debacle. He apparently hasn't directed anything since 2003, though, so I'm not sure he'd do it.

I've been worried about the possibility of this happening ever since it was announced that there would be a four-year gap between the movies back in 2014. People's priorities constantly shift, and that's amplified in the movie industry beyond almost any other, where projects come and go like waves in a hurricane. When you fail to go straight into pre-production on a sequel immediately, the odds of losing crew members begin to stack up rapidly. Edwards has a lot of drive, but he neither strikes me as an obsessive auteur like Nolan or Cameron, nor a tireless franchise-spewing machine like Bay; he's more of a free spirit, and that made his departure from Godzilla 2 a risk from the moment the first film was locked off and shipped out for release.
