I really like Godzilla's design for this movie.

Just for clarification, my favorite Toho designs were the original 54, 64, 89, 2K, & GMK.

The design for GINO is something I would have accepted had I enjoyed the movie. I was sort of like "OK, you are going for more of a T-Rex look" for him and they wanted to make him sleeker and faster. OK, I'll go with it. But when the movie turned out as poorly as it did, the design just gave me more fuel to say "That isn't Godzilla".

Here, I look at this creature and it is unmistakably Godzilla. I like the Bear like look for him as that lends itself to some powerful looking poses and it gives Godzilla more of a traditional body type. My only real knock on it is that the feet look stumpy, almost like elephant feet. But not all of the Toho designs were perfect (Son of Godzilla comes to mind) so I am willing to let a few nitpicks slide as long as the beast looks unmistakably like Godzilla.

I think the criticism from the Japanese fans that this new Godzilla is Fat is one of the most absurd things I have ever heard. I mean, they have seen Godzilla before, right? He almost always had thunder thighs, and is typically portrayed as bulky and massive. Heck, GMK-zilla looks like it has a baby bump, and I love that design.

so, you know that part on the website, where everyone is like, "Ho boy, that sounds like it's building to something!!!!" ??

It's not. It cuts off on the soundtrack just like on the site.

I dunno what to think of this. On the one hand, it feels pretty deserving of being a Godzilla soundtrack. It's got lots of brass and drums and generally is pretty bombastic and thumping...well-placed in a kaiju film. On the other hand, I'm still not getting a HOOK.

I'm about halfway through it...

Ugh, this score is so frustrating. It'd be GREAT if it were wrapped around some sort of solid hook, some sort of repeating theme...but I don't hear it. What I hear is a ton of great background music and filler stuff. Mood-setting pieces and bombastic action scores....but I don't hear anything that I'll have stuck in my head for days like I did with Pacific Rim. And I personally don't like how much of it is dissonant chaotic randomness.

This is probably the first thing that's tempered my excitement in any real way. Generally, the movies that I find to be truly INCREDIBLE are those who have incredible scores (Inception, Jaws, The Thing, Halloween, I could go on and on). This score is average. Better by far than some of the worst of the Godzilla series, nowhere near the level of some of the best. I'm sure some people will really dig it, there are parts that sound almost like they're lifted from some of Giacchino's Star Trek stuff...but again, it lacks the repetition of a single theme to really hook you to let you know, "This is the GODZILLA score" rather than, "This is the score for a movie" (not that it needed to be more "Godzilla-y...I'm just noting that it doesn't really feel unique).

If you liked the track that has already been leaked, you'll probably find some stuff to enjoy. If you didn't, strap in, because I don't think it gets any better than that...he ALMOST hits on a couple of tracks but never quite manages to wrangle the score into your memory ( the latter of which comes SO CLOSE to something good that it kinda hurts when it doesn't get there). That initial leaked track is the closest thing to a memorable theme in the score, unfortunately.

Too much dissonant violin work. It might end up working pretty well in the film (in fact, I think it will for sure) but there are times and specific tracks where it SUCKS to listen to on its own ( - was the point where I felt that way most strongly. Not pleasing to my ears)

EDIT: Just thought I'd remind everyone that I've been ALMOST universally positive about the whole film's production too. This is the first thing that has my INITIAL reaction grounded FIRMLY in disappointment.

Just finished listening to the soundtrack.

"The Wave" at the beginning sounds like pieces from Prometheus.

The soundtrack as a whole is whatever. I'm sure it will do great supporting the visuals. It felt like whenever he was about to come up with a theme someone was giving him the "wrap it up" signal and he panics and blows through them. It's just instrumental noise for the most part except a couple parts. I don't think I'll be listening to it again.

*edit*

I also wanted to snap that Japanese flute in half. Knock it off with that.

Perhaps I just knew what was coming when I saw Desplat was scoring and knew to check my expectations. Desplat has never been one for memorable, theme building or repetition. Based on that criteria I enjoy the soundtrack.

Otherwise it's nowhere close to the best of the series.

"meh" is all i have to say. its music for the sake of needing something in the background that works good enough, not something I would listen on it's own though.

My internet or network has some sort of security set-up where I can't view the ET! Online video nor listen to this soundtrack and I'm not going to waste the time to manually disable those protocols for it. It sucks because I really want to listen to the soundtrack, despite the negative/mediocre responses it's gotten on here. :|
