I think it woulda been safer to put it up against a week after Spider-Man than a week before X-Men...but I think they REALLY wanted to make 100% sure they were the #1 movie for at least one week.

GODZILLA took in 4.3 million yuan from its midnight showings in China. That's the biggest for any Hollywood film this year. Its still early, but opening day can be anywhere from 70-100 million yuan, which is between 11-16m $. That's a big opening day in China. GODZILLA gets to run free in China for two weeks before TF4... So expect huge numbers in China. My guess is that it'll have a shot at 150m there.

GODZILLA has a decent shot at 550m worldwide. It still will make 20m between the U.S and other foreign markets. We can't forget Japan.. But its unpredictable there. It would be awesome if we could match Kong(2005)'s worldwide total of 550.

All right.

Highest opening ever for a creature feature.

Highest opening ever for a disaster movie.

One of the highest openings ever for a non-sequel (#6ish, I think).

For $hits and giggles, how do we think a sequel* would do? Can it be a "Dark Knight" and potentially double the originals gross? Or is it more Star Trek 2 and stay within the same ballpark as the original?

*This is a hypothetical Godzilla 2. Obviously release date, marketing and who he fights will factor in big time.

Looks like it took the low end of that estimate.. 70m yuan. So not terrible for opening day in China.

Lets not get too excited about China yet. Apparently WOM isn't great there either.

These numbers are fantastic. Godzilla appears to be a shoe in to surpass half a billion dollars in theatres.
Lets see if it can eclipse King Kong to become the 3rd highest grossing creature feature film of all time: http://boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/? ... eature.htm
For its 4 week total domestically its surpassed Kong, only thing is Kong Was making over a million for about 10 weeks straight, and I'd be surprised if Godzilla has as long of a theatrical run in a blockbuster season.
Jurassic Park (which made over a billion worldwide) and probably the lost world (which made 228 domestically and a 618 million worldwide) are out of reach. But its beaten JPIII, Gremlins, GINO, Super8, Pacific Rim, Aliens, Congo, AvP, and Cloverfield among others. I wonder if it can stay in that spot after Jurassic World comes out next year?

For Disaster Films I imagine it will overtake Armageddon and World War Z's domestic totals to become the 6th ranked of all time (though reaching War of the Worlds, Twister, Gravity and ID4 seems unrealistic) http://boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=disaster.htm
Though if it somehow makes approx 0.6 billion it would surpass WotW and Twister worldwide and north of that and it can take out Lost World's worldwide. It could easily become the number 2 CGI star film worldwide if not domestically behind avatar http://boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=cgistar.htm (it's already in 5th worldwide, though thats probably only because they dont count Transformers as one)

Also its in first for Asian Remakes, Foreign Remakes and 3rd for Sci Fi Remakes, behind WotW (which it could surpass) and I am Legend (which no one realized was a remake).
For films of this genre these numbers are nothing to scoff at. Fans concerned about box office success should feel pleased.

Benjamin, I did mean to at least address inflation in my post. But the fact that movies are about twice as expensive as they were in 1990 and theater popcorn is easily moreso I think it should be negated. Not to mention people were balling back in the 90s on average and after the recent recession should have less to spend at the movies.

When Godzilla 98 came out, the most expensive theater in my city had it for $10 and I thought it was outrageous. Now I'm lucky to spend under $15 for a matinee, let alone Imax 3d during prime time plus the fandango surcharge (btw I avoid 3d but the imax 3d preview was a necessity for that free poster day and the roar during the intro was pretty cool.). Yes those prices go into the movies returns but what we arent measuring is the number of boomers who avoid cinemas nowadays except rarely due to the massive increase in not only prices of movies but concessions.

I had a $50 paycard from my job and went to a matinee showing of DOFP last weekend at that formerly most expensive theater in the city with my girlfriend, and blew the entire card on that showing and our 2 kids pack combos and nacho cheese (cheapskate that I am). I could buy a blu ray HD combo pack and a box of orville red. movie theater butter popcorn for less than $30 in October and watch it whenever I want, or just cross my fingers for netflix. Not to mention the theatre itself was relatively empty and would have been packed years ago (but other factors such as the surplus of theaters and larger screens could have affected that).

You're going to have more viewers when people have longer wait times for home releases, don't have to shell out +$100 to take their family to the cinemas in imax 3d, and home tvs dont have such high quality and large screen sizes in comparison. Music celebrates small gains now because of how p2p has changed that industry. I think we should do the same with movies and ignore inflation until I'm no longer forced to buy a kids pack to avoid paying more for popcorn than I do fillet minion at a fancy restaurant. I'm on the verge of boycotting the theater experience altogether like my parents if this trend continues...well at least until Godzilla 2.
