^ Agreed. Not all that crazy about the huge lower jaw (reminds me of Godzilla crossed with Bluto. LOL) but at least with this sculpt this head is in proportion with the rest of the body... not like a bobcat head grafted on a tiger's body. I also like the bold dorsal plates.

With the '14 design it felt like they were minimized or downplayed, like the designer(s) couldn't find a legitimate or physically believable explanation for why they would be there. '19 tried to be hip with stupid tribal / tattoo etchings carved/embedded on/in them. However, this SDCC '13 maquette just says "Hey! Check out these massive, gnarly, in-your-face Millennium-flavored Godzilla spines!!!"

That's the original. They enlarged the arms, swapped heads and put on Millennium spines.

I do wish G'14/19 had a better sized head, but '19's spines are a vast improvement. The "tribal" design is just the crags/creases in the spines. They were in G'14 but with how dark that movie was and how muted they made his breath color, it wasn't as prominent. It's like Edwards had the atomic breath spine light saturation at 5 out of 100 but Dougherty would put it up to 200.

Well by golly... so it is! (Nice digital trickery... and I still like it better than either of the Legendary ended up with.)

After these two movies and having watched them again a few times, I keep asking myself why in the world did they feel the need to essentially remove Godzilla's neck??? And make him so damn obese? There are some angles of these designs in motion where instead of "Skreeeonk!" it would be more fitting if Godzilla was going "Hey! Hey! HEY!!!"

I prefer the adjustments made to the 2019 design (especially the fins) but I've always felt the 2014 design (and film) was exactly what it needed to be - a reestablishment to audiences that Godzilla is a big, mean, nuclear-powered dinosaur.

I remember when this face pic leaked from somewhere (a licensing expo?) and thinking, "That's it, they got it right." It wasn't the 100% final design, but I was relieved.

(But of course people freaked out about the gills - and later the feet).

That promo image has a more pleasing head to body proportions than the actual design. But yeah when that leaked I was happy with what I saw.
