There's not a lot about the original battleship Yamato, because the Japanese audience already quite familiar with this, but there are the iconic establishing shots of the wreck sitting in the bed of the evaporated ocean (as on the initial posters for the film).

It follows the premise of the original story faithfully, touches on incidents and elements from the original television series, and adds others from some of the sequels. It also takes the well-known conventions of the original story, and puts a fresh, new spin on them — a brave and bold move on the part of director Yamazaki and screenwriter Sato (who are married in real life), which were, IMHO, very successful.

As I told Tim Eldred (web guru of ) at lunch after the screening, "It's the best live action YAMATO ever made!"

I was just watching Gamera Super Monster and it got me thinking that while this movie will undoubtedly be great what it's missing is a Gamera cameo...sequel perhaps? lol

You're welcome — but, we really have to thank STAR BLAZERS/YAMATO Superfan, , who talked Voyager Entertainment into hiring him to promote the series (by creating a comic book) and provide content for the website — truly an amazing, and aways evolving, work-in-progress — which is kickass.

The 'Buck stops with 'Yamato': Space adventure has atmosphere & star power, but lacks gravity
by Cristoph Mark / Daily Yomiuri Staff Writer:

Mostly negative review concerns itself with the writing, acting and drama of the film, but its obvious that the reviewer doesn't understand or know enough about the franchise, and relies mostly upon comparing it to the recent BATTLESTAR GALACTICA redux. Of course, these comparisons are an easy crutch for a reviewer, much like how everyone compared the original GALACTICA to STAR WARS. I saw the film, too, and I felt that it was much better than he is giving it credit for — and as a YAMATO fan, I didn't feel it missed the mark.

It's especially ironic since (according to legend) the late producer, Yoshinobu Nishizaki, who created YAMATO, was asked by Glen A. Larson — when he was being sued by 20th Century Fox over GALACTICA being too similar to STAR WARS — to speak on his defense. Larson asked Nishizaki to recognize that GALACTICA lifted from YAMATO and not STAR WARS! Nishizaki found the whole incident to be rather amusing.

It seems that 32 years later, the two series are still connected in their rebirths!

Here's a positive review of SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO by the Japan Times' redoubtable Mark Schilling:

It'll be interesting sitting for about 2 1/2 hours watching a movie not knowing hardly a word of Japanese. I'll do it anyway!

Armand,
Your blog has the incorrect plot synopsis — you just carried over IMDb's error — it's for last year's animated film SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO: RESURRECTION! Here's the real plot of the film (which was everywhere on the internets):

The year is 2199, and the Earth has been under radioactive siege from extraterrestrials known as the Gamilas for five years. The Earth's surviving population has moved underground to escape the bombardment, but the contamination is slowly penetrating to reach them. The last space battleship of the exhausted Earth Defense Forces, Yamato, sets out on a journey to Iscandar, a planet located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, to acquire a device that can heal the ravaged Earth before it is too late.

You could have very easily gone to the of the live action movie — the one you meant to talk about — which has an , complete with correct cast listing, credits and the plot synopsis. You could have also checked the Wikipedia page for the live action film, which I edited, for correct info.

"Some critics have panned the movie"

"Panned"? That's hardly true. One critic gave it a "meh" — it wasn't panned — he thought it was a rip-off of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. The other review, Mark Schilling, who isn't a big SF guy, gave it a very positive review (I posted the links above). Meanwhile, like the original GODZILLA, audiences are flocking to see this film, and in ONE DAY, it pushed HARRY POTTER out of the #1 slot at the Japanese box office.

The movie is rating between 3-4 Stars out of 5 in the professional reviews out so far.

"some purists of the anime series are peeved over some character changes"

The only griping I heard was from a handful of American fans, and even less Japanese fans, and that was before the film was released!

"Still, the movie seems to be doing well"

"Doing well"? That's quite and understatement, Armand. Tickets for opening day were sold out in July, Armand. Audiences are flocking to see this film, and in one day (a mid-week day, mind you), it pushed HARRY POTTER out of the #1 slot at the Japanese box office.

Most of my Japanese friends who have seen the film have rated it "Great", and the same goes for my American pals now in Japan, who are flipping out.

YAMATO is to the Japanese what STAR TREK and STAR WARS is to Americans — it is ingrained in the Japanese pop culture, and has a legion of fans. I think you might want to do a little more reading up on the film — and YAMATO in general — before going to see the film.

I recommend: — the English language repository for all things YAMATO and STAR BLAZERS (the US adaptation) — kind of like a Library of Alexandria for Yamatoania (find the reference in that statement!)!

I think based on the fact that it knocked Potter out of the #1 spot alone is a good reason to check this out. I was already sold on this, so it just makes me anticipate its release over here all that more.
