As you're probably aware, Yamazaki has been the go-to guy for Hollywood-style blockbusters for the Japanese market for a good while and he's currently making a kaiju film for Toho set in the immediate post-war era.

... as you're also probably aware: this us widely rumored to actually be a Godzilla film. Possibly for the 70th anniversary. Yamazaki previously featured Godzilla in a cameo dream sequence in his film Always 2 and directed the animated sequence of the recent Godzilla theme park ride.

It's refreshing to know next to nothing about an upcoming film like this, not even when it will be released or whether it's actually a Godzilla flick. It's like the pre-internet days when we didn't know a movie was happening until the first teaser or poster showed up in theaters.

^ We're so used to following Hollywood productions that it's constantly surprising that Japan keeps such a tight lid on their's. Shin Ultraman was in the planning stages for years and did we hear a single thing about it?

I hope Yamazaki gets announced for the director of a new film on Godzilla day. I always liked his style

The first rumors of Shin Ultraman surfaced early in 2019 but apparently, according to Wikipedia, Anno began writing it back in the Summer of 2017! There's no telling how long Toho and Yamazaki have been secretly developing this new kaiju film before they started filming.
