New Toho Godzilla Series after Legendary

Hi All,

I was just thinking, if Toho ever picks up the Godzilla series again someday, I think it would be really great if they went back to the showa days of Godzilla being a defender of man-kind.

As many of us know, back in the early 90's we almost got an American Godzilla film directed by Jan de Pont, where he envisioned a Godzilla to be a product of an ancient civilization created to protect the earth from an alien threat.

I think this would be a great direction for Toho to take the new Godzilla series, with endless possibilities of stories and ideas for both new and classic enemy monsters.

I for one would be very excited to see something like this, and by the time Toho does pick up a new Godzilla series (if ever), it would probably be long after Legendary's Godzilla series of films. By that time, Toho may just go all CGI with Godzilla, and if that becomes the case, it would be great to finally use Stan Winston's Godzilla design, which I have always loved.

Man, that would be so awesome! Maybe someday...

I'll be frank: unless there's a sudden injection of good creative talent at their studio, and an initiative to work at a reasonable pace on each new instalment (i.e. one every two or three years with considerable time spent in each stage of production), I would rather Toho didn't bring back Godzilla on their own again.

I don't want to see Wataru Mimura attached to another one of their scripts, nor Masaaki Tezuka as director. I do not want to hear that Toho strong-armed yet another director into shoving in King Ghidorah, Mothra, and/or Mechagodzilla, rather than trusting the filmmakers' judgments. Making bank is nice for the studio and for the fans, yes, that's generally hard to dispute. But a lack of care, passion and talent has been painfully evident in many of these movies since at least 1991. I'm glad the franchise has come into the hands of people who all give a damn, even if it had to cross the Pacific to do so.

Apologies if I sound bitter. I do enjoy many of the Heisei and Millennium films, and I respect most of the hard-working, creative people involved in the productions. I just don't think the Toho suits have respected the filmmaking process where these sorts of movies are concerned. Ten years have passed since GFW, but I have my doubts that the studio would do things much differently nowadays, were they to reboot Godzilla themselves.

I don't think I want a TOHO film for a LONG time. Just think of Legendary's Godzilla as a TOHO film. :P

I was just thinking about this the other day. Let me say this. I posed a question on another forum asking the opinion if Ultraman is now more popular than Godzilla in Japan. The general consensus was yes. And this is something I didn't think would have been possible say 10-15 years ago. Toho stated that they were going to retire Godzilla for 10 years or so. He's still a cultural icon not only in Japan, but the world over. I do believe that Toho will make another Godzilla movie. Hopefully, when they do, they'll incorporate some new ideas with some old ones. His 60th anniversary is next year. Hopefully Toho is planning something after the LP Godzilla film.

Btw, I haven't posted on this forum for years. It's good to be back.

I'm all for ultimately seeing some new stuff from Toho...It can be a LONG time for all I really care (75th anniversary?)

but NOT the Jan de Bont thing. Not ever.
