New Toho Godzilla Series after Legendary

Well, it's been one exciting evening. This news is greater than I could have hoped; a veritable dream team who've proven themselves as exciting, dynamic creators and who've drawn so much inspiration from the classic Tokusatsu that we love.

A year ago I would have scoffed at Toho getting back into the Godzilla game. They've spent the better part of the last few decades churning out Godzilla movies that were as quick and cheap as could be allowed, mining the Godzilla brand without much spirit behind it. Then everything that happened; Godzilla '14 success in Japan, Toho's insistence that they were out to make an exemplary Godzilla movie and restore Godzilla's position as the ultimate Japanese pop culture icon, the enormous freaking Godzilla head erected on top of a skyscraper. It felt legit!

... and of course, these are the guys behind the traditional Tokusatsu effects exhibit, the god warrior short, and Higuchi pushed for a combination of CGI and practical effects for his (much anticipated) Attack on Titan films. I can't wait to see what this film will look like!

I'm just so excited for both this and Legendary's sequel, for new Pacific Rim and King Kong films (and, oh yeah: Jurassic Park this summer). A few years ago I'd have agreed that the '50s and '60s heyday of giant monster movies would never, ever be replicated. This is dang close!

Also, I'm sort of laughing about Toho making Godzilla bigger than G2014 - it's like they're going out of their way just to one up LP. Oh well, the creative team behind this film is awesome and I'm super excited about it.

Each successive Godzilla film from this point forward will marginally increase Godzilla's size. It's a new tradition.

I want to get excited about this, but I can't help but look at the date that this news came out in Japan. Does Japan do April Fool's Day?

Ok, I'm able to digest this and most of this news doesn't excite me.

The good:

Higuchi!!!! This means that chances are, the special effects will be a combination of CGI and live-action. Higuchi also likes to use more than just suits for his monsters. The Colossal Titan is a big puppet and not just a man in a suit. He also knows how to use CGI.

The bad:

Hideaki Anno. I know nothing about Evangelion, but when this news broke a few hours ago, a friend of mine linked me to this video. http://channelawesome.com/anime-abandon ... d-rebirth/ Dare god help us!!!! If you don't know anything about Eva like me, just watch the first 5 minutes summing up Eva and you have every reason to be scared.

Rushed production. Surprise!!! Production in the fall and release in the summer. So about 9 month production! Yes, the plot does seem to be written some time ago, but the effects and everything still needs time to polish. Whether it's CGI or puppets or suits, you need time to build them. Post production takes a long time to do, and Toho is just forcing it out as quickly as possible.

I may think Hideaki Anno is a crazy person, and a depressed crazy person. But he does love the genre of Tokusatsu and knowing him this movie would probably be close thematically to what a Kinji Fukusaku (Virus, Green Slime, Battles Without Honor Or Humanity) The Return of Godzilla would have been like.

A heavy toll on the populace like in Gamera 3, real world implications and of course CRAZY MONSTER BATTLES

Evangelion is great. Tons of Toho/Ultraman homages in there. The guy knows his stuff and he's super creative. Don't forget he wrote the Warrior God short that Higuchi directed. These two know what they're doing.

Yeah, he's a clinically depressed weirdo, but so what? The team of him and Higuchi (who also had a heavy hand in Eva) is a great choice for this. And judging from what they've already said, it sounds like they are going for something much darker than the Legendary Godzilla. I welcome the contrast, and I'll look forward to both Godzilla movies. Its a great time to be a fan.

I get the odd feeling I'm going to end up liking LegeGoji over AnnoGoji from the design perspective.

Everything about Anno and Higuchi working on this project just speaks SHARP ANGLES AND SPIKES.

Can I ask why some people seem to automatically think this movie will be like Evangelion?

Just because he made Eva doesn't mean he's going to have a crazy existential Godzilla movie. He also did Nadia, Gunbuster, Cutie Honey. He's done a lot of different types of things. When you heard delToro was making a kaiju movie did you automatically think it was going to be a dark fairytale? Anno is every bit as diverse a film maker. He's talented and has wild ideas and a great imagination. That's why I think he's a great choice.

if you can go from Eva to Cutie Honey, I'd say you're pretty well rounded.

Apparently Higuchi is directing the movie and the FX. Anno is listed as writer and "Chief Director" whatever that means.

Well, I'm pleased with the news, Hideki Anno is a Tokusatsu fan and Higuchi's made a good job with the 90's Gamera, So, even if it's a bit rushed the porduction, I'm not worried.

Evangelion has it's issues (not much of a fan, but I do love the battle scenes, well made, the story, well...it had a cute penguin)

Well, now we have something to discuss for the rest of the month.

Wait...month...April 1...are you guys sure this is not an april fools joke? I just want to be sure.
