I think some of this might be semantics and that -- in essence -- there is agreement where there appears to be no agreement.
Here are core statements. Are any of these argued?
1. Godzilla will have a "nuclear" origin of some kind.
2. Godzilla will have some Japanese origin of some kind.
3. Godzilla will retain fundemental physical capabilities (almost indestructable, breath ray/weapon, glowing dorsal fins -- the whole package.)
Do we have core agreements on those? Yes? No?
I think references to "one, nine, five, four" might be misinterpreted. IMHO I'm not sure I would particularly need a direct, indirect or even slight reference to the actual storyline of 1954's Gojira, but I think I'd want Godzilla to be -- you, know, Godzilla. The question is -- do the elements that made 1954 happen (the 3 statements above) continue in Legendary's release? (Are there more? Is there a reference to the naming convention, Gojira? Is there a Rodan? A Mothra? etc., etc.) Maybe that's where Gojiraknight's concerns lie.
What should they not mess with? Or, is it all up for grabs? How do you avoid the kind of dismissive pride that produced GINO?
