No other monster. Just Godzilla.

My preference is that this series is primarily Godzilla vs. Man. That's the central conflict that runs through the film and each successive sequel. It's what the series (back in G'54) was founded on: Godzilla vs. Man.

Man's Inherent Destructiveness is made manifest in the form of Godzilla. Now what can they do about it? That's the story. That's the mythology.

While the other monsters won't be periphery characters, they will be there to serve as backdrop to this primary conflict.

So

Film 1: Godzilla vs. Man

Film 2: Godzilla vs. Man vs. Some Other Monster

or Mothra and Man vs. Godzilla

Film 3: Godzilla and Man and Mothra vs. King Ghidorah

Can you tell I've thought about this?

My top two choices are King Ghidrah and Angilas. While I like Rodan, I can't see flying monsters being too interesting in a fight. Even Mothra had to use the caterpillars because there's only so much you can do with battling flying creatures.

no other Toho kaiju...gimme something new...or maybe other Toho kaiju, but ones that have not appeared alongside Godzilla

but still I say IF another monster is included in the FIRST film, make it a new one, that way nobody can complain that their favorite kaiju got shafted for screen time...

I was thinking about making a "Solo Godzilla or Multiple Monsters" thread.

One one hand, a film focused on Godzilla would be most appropriate for rebooting the franchise. Godzilla is the star, after all. Leave Mothra and Rodan for sequels, ect.

On the other hand GINO was a movie about a solo Godzilla assault on a metropolitan city and this film, though moderately successfull, is something everyone wants to distance themselves from (think The Incredible Hulk's relationship with Ang Lee's Hulk).

Let's not forget that the best Godzilla sequel, Mothra vs. Godzilla was a "vs." movie but still the main thrust of the plot was Godzilla as the "Titan on Terror" and a second monster did nothing to diminish the fact that it's his movie.

Avatar's success, with it's world of strange creatures and epic battles might be a factor here. How much more spectacular would a well-done Godzilla with the best, modern FX be with monsters and fantastic battles - maybe in 3-D! This is a blockbuster movie and it will be all about spectacle.

My vote is for KG and Mechagodzilla...they never get used....LOL

I agree, I'm not really interested in a Godzilla vs. any flying only monster, unless that monster is part of a ensemble. Now if the monster is a ground based monster with flight capabilities, that's fine.

Now I realize KG is used a lot and don't think we need him in the first movie, but I think he would be most impressive with modern effects...maybe if there is a 2nd or 3rd movie.

I also don't mind the idea of Gigan being used at some point but let's not make him such a Nancy.

To be realistic here and to cover their bets, I wouldn't be surprised if the new movie had another monster alongside Godzilla.

Personally, I want them to have a solo Godzilla movie. Also it may help dealing with the distancing needed from GINO. Also well a part of me wants a scene where the only words to describe it that the humans needed to go over a mountain of their own dead in order to finally defeat Godzilla.

I don't know about multiple monsters, unless it's some lesser creature made to get offed early on. I think we do need an opponent for Godzilla. He's known for crushing buildings, but just as many people know him for kicking the asses of monsters far and wide.
