You aren't establishing for the audience that Godzilla is one badass mofo...you're establishing it for the characters in the story.
Bear in mind that the characters have either a.) Never seen Godzilla or b.) My preference, haven't seen Godzilla in 50+ years. Either way they'll need an introduction to just how devastating he can be on his own.
Here's my opinion...we've never had a solo "Godzilla destroys city" film made with American special effects. If the first movie is successful there will be sequels and there will be other monsters. That's a given. But for this first movie I'd really just like to see Godzilla, as the solo draw, fighting the military and destroying cities. I think it's good for the series story arc to establish that. And I think people who see this movie (whether they're fans or not) will be satisfied with that.
If the very first movie is Godzilla vs. Something then you're coming right out and saying that this is all the series is about...two big ass monsters fighting. But if you start off with a solo movie, you're saying that Godzilla is the threat, and Man vs. Godzilla, not Man vs. Godzilla vs. Some Other Monster, is the thread that underlies the series.
