A new foe - What should Godzilla fight?
We've all been musin' and specalatin' about the possibility of a new Godzilla film by Legendary...and if Toho's notorious business practices are any indication, Legendary will not be willing to shell out the extra few million buckaroos for Mothra or Gigan.
It's also become apparent that it would not be such a great idea for the Monster King to go solo for a reboot film; there's truly been only one film where Godzilla doesn't have anything to fight, and that's Gojira. In Return of Godzilla he was given a flying potato (that's what the Super X looks like to me) to blast at, and that added some excitement. Part of the reason why Emmerich and Devlin made the terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE decision to have Zilla poop out a bunch of screaming raptor brats was because, simply, they needed to pad the plot.
In other words, we know who Godzilla is, his motivations are ambiguous at best, and simply shooting at him over and over won't carry a movie for long (yes, it worked in the original, but that was back when a giant unstoppable monster was a fresh idea).
Therein lies the question: who or what should be Godzilla's new punching bag?
While an extraterrestrial threat like the Gryphon would be nice, I'd personally prefer that be held over for a sequel where more story could be focused on it. In a reboot film, I'd much rather see something akin to the treatment for "Godzilla 2," the proposed sequel to the 1998 debacle that never happened. For those unawares, it was a literal army of mutant insects of all different shapes and sizes, their big horrible mother, something like a giant termite queen, being the big boss. It works on a lot of levels: it presents a threat worse than Godzilla, gives the Big G a chance to be a hero, and the concept and design compliment a giant reptile by being giant insects, something that's ALWAYS worked in a G flick's favor (and THINK OF THE TOYS).
Since we very, VERY likely will not be getting any Toho classics, what's everyone else's take? What would you like to see Godzilla beat the crapola out of? Giant alien cyborg/Not-Gigan? A shapeshifter? Ancient god-beast? I'm runnin' out of archetypes here...
