I think the Rossio/Elliot script has improved with age only when compared to what we ultimatley got with GINO. I mean, it was a fine story for a Gamera movie. But not Godzilla.
The thing that D/E got right that Rossio/Elliot didn't is that Godzilla is ultimately a mistake. He wasn't manufactured by aliens or by Atlantians or what have you. He was basically a guy that got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think in many ways that's what speaks to G-fans and non-fans alike. The idea that something so destructive could come into being by accident.

Again, no one's going to make a $30 million Godzilla movie. Sure District 9 is profitable. But there's a difference between profitable and huge summer blockbuster that makes enough money keep the studio running for the year. If a Hollywood studio makes a Godzilla movie, they're going to make it a tentpole picture.
