New Godzilla in 2008?

Postby Kaiju Nexus » Wed Dec 13, 2006 8:46 pm

I've been told this by a few people, too, but am not sure where it's coming from...

Probably fake...

It's fake. Honestly, why would Tomiyama or anyone at Toho think this would be a good idea right now? After Godzilla's continuously declining box office performance from 2001 to 2004, with the gala anniversary GFW being the huge flop that it was, with the underperformance of King Kong in Japan, and with the box office failure of Gamera The Brave, why would these business executives suddenly see bringing Godzilla back after another mere 4-year hiatus a good or smart marketing decision?

Besides, wasn't there another 4-year haitus before they brought Godzilla back in 1999. If so then the recent news here is also a fake.

I'm not saying it's not true, but (as he says) you might want to take this with a grain of salt. As far as I can see, no one on the popular Japanese G forums like G-Kingdom and Godzilla on the Web BBS are talking about having seen this article, nor any news about a new Godzilla. I also can't find any references to "Godzilla" on online news sites like Shimbun or Daily Yomiuri, other than Hideki Matsui. A scan of the actual article would be interesting.

Perhaps the news is getting lost in translation, and is really about the new Godzilla footage shot specifically for the new Godzilla pachinko game?

^^Thanks.

It just alarms me that this thread is full of people hoping and praying for a new Godzilla film to come out in the next year or two - regardless the further harm a new film would no doubt do to the franchise.

People seem to have this need for immediate gratification when it comes to stuff like this. A nice long wait will most likely occur in quality, well thought out product when and if the Japanese public (NOT Toho) decides they're ready for a new film. Anything that happens before then would be suicide.

Then I guess we all must ask how long does the series need to rest and regroup.

Some benchmarks to consider.

1. How many good special effects films Toho will need to produce in the time period before working on the Godzilla series again (and with the same group of producers or as same as possible).

2. How many years do you think before Toho once again starts creating more Godzilla movies.

This does not mean that I do not support the halt, in fact I do and what Legion and MouthForWar have said have made sense.

I say we need at least a ten year wait - if not more. That's how long it took for the public to cry out for new Godzilla films between the release of Terror of Mechagodzilla in 1975 and Return of Godzilla in 1984. And it wasn't even until Godzilla vs King Ghidora came out in 1991 for the Heisei series to really take off.

But since then Toho has milked this series dry of every bit of originality it had. Bringing back Godzilla so soon after Godzilla vs Destroyah was a huge mistake, whether or not one likes the Milennium series. The Japanese public has been force fed this stuff like crazy in the past 15 years. It's time for a good, long break. We may not like it, but that's what this franchise needs.

I have reservations about this news (Like I said, I want to see the article in question or wait until the news spreads a little further).

If it is true, I'm okay with it. Another Godzilla film is something I would like to see. A remake of the original Godzilla? As long as it is done right and done well. Just don't make it as a slap in the face to the masters who made the original.

As for how it will do in Japan, WHO CARES!?! If Godzilla fails in theaters, it is Toho's fault. You have to think about Japan in terms of America. The public there can be just as cynical as the public here! Over there, Japanese movies tend to do as well as films made here, with a few exceptions (Lorelei, Japan Sinks and Death Note are the few tokusatsu eiga to succeed at the box office there). The decline of American films here (some corporations pass the buck to file-sharing) parallels to how well most Japanese movies fare against American films there.

At this rate, television would be Godzilla's greatest hope. A Godzilla TV series will do quite well with children, as many superhero shows would nowadays. But as I understand it, Toho absolutely refuses to make a Godzilla TV series. They won't even let Godzilla films be seen on any channel other than Pay-Tee-Vee, because Toho wants people to PAY to see Godzilla!!! They want people to go to the theaters and pay MONEY. But to the Japanese audience, "Who wants to pay to see Godzilla when you can watch daikaijuu for free on an Ultraman or Super Sentai program?" Both Tsuburaya and Toei/Bandai make a KILLING off of the merchandise, healthy ratings and video sales!

And people wonder why Toho won't take advantage of those things.

Just waiting doesn’t mean any quality is going to come of the Godzilla franchise. It surly didn’t help the 90s films. Waiting could possibly help the box office, but that’s about it.

A great director is necessary, as is an awesome sfx team; I believe those elements will play a big roll in the success of an early (2008) film…If Toho decides to do this, I hope they choose the RIGHT people to make it RIGHT.

In light of what’s going on in the world today regarding nuclear proliferation, the remake of the original Godzilla is perfect timing. I’m a Godzilla fan, so naturally I want to see more Godzilla movies.

Hey, honestly Godzilla 1984 is really Toho's remake of the '54 film.
Yeah it's set in the 80's but all in all it's a remake of the very first film. That's hopefully the last time anyone with a brain in Japan will attempt that idea. I'm sick of remakes, reimaginings, ripoffs, etc. If there is a new Godzilla movie being planned how could anyone imagine seeing scans or ANYTHING right now especially if it's just being basically talked about at the moment. And BTW :

It doesn't matter how long of a break Toho takes from doing Godzilla movies. If the movie sucks then it sucks. After four years hibernation or fourteen years hibernation. All it's gonna take for Godzilla to become popular again in Japan is a GOOD MOVIE. That's it! That's all Toho has to do. Quit being cheap-asses and rushing the Hell out of things and visually a Godziila flick can look great. Add to that a decent director and kick-ass story and they have a winner at the box office. Maybe that will happen.

NO REMAKES!!
