I have reservations about this news (Like I said, I want to see the article in question or wait until the news spreads a little further).
If it is true, I'm okay with it. Another Godzilla film is something I would like to see. A remake of the original Godzilla? As long as it is done right and done well. Just don't make it as a slap in the face to the masters who made the original.
As for how it will do in Japan, WHO CARES!?! If Godzilla fails in theaters, it is Toho's fault. You have to think about Japan in terms of America. The public there can be just as cynical as the public here! Over there, Japanese movies tend to do as well as films made here, with a few exceptions (Lorelei, Japan Sinks and Death Note are the few tokusatsu eiga to succeed at the box office there). The decline of American films here (some corporations pass the buck to file-sharing) parallels to how well most Japanese movies fare against American films there.
At this rate, television would be Godzilla's greatest hope. A Godzilla TV series will do quite well with children, as many superhero shows would nowadays. But as I understand it, Toho absolutely refuses to make a Godzilla TV series. They won't even let Godzilla films be seen on any channel other than Pay-Tee-Vee, because Toho wants people to PAY to see Godzilla!!! They want people to go to the theaters and pay MONEY. But to the Japanese audience, "Who wants to pay to see Godzilla when you can watch daikaijuu for free on an Ultraman or Super Sentai program?" Both Tsuburaya and Toei/Bandai make a KILLING off of the merchandise, healthy ratings and video sales!
And people wonder why Toho won't take advantage of those things.
