Well, CN has a history of dropping crap when it gets too risky -
the WBs TMNT got scrapped at the last minute(thank goodness) when they saw the pilot and cringed...I don't remember why, but it was something simple.
a "Rival Schools/Justice Gakuen" anime was coming there two years ago, and they pulled the plug at the last minute due to licensing issues.
*EDIT: CN and Shogagukan Jap. Inc. couldn't come to terms on a release schedule, so the project went to Production I.G., but then they couldn't come to terms on a contract with CAPCOM and J.G.'s resident manga publisher, so they scrapped the entire show.
Its' remnants eventually became Ghost in the Shell:SAC and IGPx.
the last one I know was an Ultraman project from Tsuburaya and Studio Canal that never made it past preproduction....Eventually, the same animators would continue on to other projects like that ugly Code Lyoko and Totally Spies.
Oh...and the widely announced "El Santo" cartoon....It's been two years since they announced it on the news and it never surfaced.
So yeah....I guess you're right - it might not happen, but remember the series wasn't meant to come out anytime soon. If anything, they'll announce something at the 2007 comicon if it's still legit.

But hey did you see the Fantastic Four? It was pretty good. Eh the good thing if a Godzilla anime was pursued it would be a good way to introduce more exotic monsters. Ie: ones that would be hard to render with cgi or suitmation.

I'd like to see a good honest attempt at it.
Think about it: incredible, unlimited range of movement and expression.... Godzy's bulk could be made to look even more gigantic... we'd be privy to some great tooth and claw AND beam weapon exchanges.
I'm even thinking of those really cool prototype drawings that we've seen here and there (like on tohokingdom.com). Some of those look really fluid, but never made it to the screen looking like that for obvious reasons of functionality.
I bet if Toho funded and released a really decent anime movie that it would go a LOOOOONG way to re-energizing the genre. Follow it up with a great live action movie and Godzy's masta blastin' the fan-base again!!!
