Yeah so anyway...
If the 1954 attack isn't essential to the character (in the same way Krypton is essential to Superman) then why would the Japanese use it for every new series? Just for convenience? I doubt it. From their perspective the 1954 film is the starting point for the series. In order for it to be a Godzilla movie, and not another variation of GINO, it must at least reference the 1954 attack. Clearly that's how the Japanese feel about it. Whether the American filmmakers feel the same way remains to be seen.
However it is clear from some other American interpretations that the 1954 attack is considered essential as well - Cerasini's and Ciencin's novels, Dark Horse comics (which had their own version of it)...like I said earlier, the 1954 attack is, in some ways, "sacred" to the character. Personally I (and I'm sure many others) feel it's an essential component to the canon. If this new movie doesn't have it then it will feel like an American Godzilla, not the Godzilla.
Now, will most casual audiences have seen Gojira or G:KOTM? No, of course not. But so what? You didn't have to see G'54 to understand G'85 or GMK. Hell, you didn't have to see Terminator to understand Terminator 2. I didn't. All audiences need to know is Godzilla attacked in 1954. He messed Japan's sh!t up. Now he's back. What do we do?
