Destroy All Monsters was totally meant to be far-out futuristic when it was made. Walking on the moon was still the stuff of fiction in 1968, and the movie is set three decades in the future with an entire base of people working there, traveling between Earth and the moon every day. Plus, they've got all of Earth's monsters contained in a Pacific archipelago, unlike the '50s and '60s when they just ran rampant.

I've always considered Japan one of the most technically advanced countries on this planet. But how is it that they don't have the CGI technology that we see in US produced movies every year?

Yeah, the technical advancement has nothing to do with it: CGI requires man hours, a whole lot of people putting in a whole lot of time to make stuff look good. That's why it's so expensive. The United States is an enormous country and our films are popular not just here but worldwide, so spending a whole lot of money on a film (in this case paying hundreds of animators) is justified because the film has the potential of making so much money. Japan is a much smaller country and their films don't have the same overseas popularity, so spending the same amount of money is unfeasible.

^I only recently had the finer points explained to me.

Basically, as with stop motion and hand drawn animation it all boils down to: animation = animators, a human being behind ever single visual thing for every second making it happen. In order to get the amount of usable footage on time for these big movies they hire an insane amount of animators, usually multiple companies (didn't 4 effects houses work on Godzilla '14?). You're not paying for technology, you're paying for people to sit down and create things through the technology.

Personally you know what I'd want? Dagarah...Think about it. It's a really unique kaiju and it could be done as an homage to Kawakita. Also it and Goji have never come to blows. Doesn't mean it should be a main monster. Just it should make an appearance.

The fact that the amount of Japan's ticket sales can never match ours is another factor for conservative effects and budgets. Also, their films are not as successful internationally as ours.

Why is Toho even doing this? I mean G2014 was a huge success and sequels are planned. What need is there to reboot the franchise?

^Godzilla being popular again because of the LP film doesn't necessarily mean anyone in Japan really wants to see a Toho-produced film. This could easily bite Toho on the ass.

I see this as a now or never moment for Japanese tokusatsu, and I'm hopeful for a good movie (whether its successful or not is second).

Whatever happens, I just hope for a fun, well written movie. I wouldn't mind a movie written like a Showa era movie.

You know I imagine since this movie is from Toho and not Legendary. We here in America will not get to see it for quite some time until after it's release. Like probably months, maybe it won't even get an american release.

^I think it'll certainly be released, and I don't think that (considering how wired the world is, far different from the environment of any previous Japanese Godzilla release) we'll have long to wait. If there is any theatrical release it'll probably be limited: festivals, maybe some art house circuit... maybe a live-streaming thing where the film has a wide release but only for a day or two? That's the big thing now.

Doubt it will get any major theatrical release here, unless of course, it turns out to be a very good, exceptional movie, so much so, that someone like Warner Brothers may want a hand in this.

Changing subjects, in keeping with the tradition of the Heisei and Millennium series, which actor or actress from the Showa era would you want to see come back for this movie, assuming Toho goes that route? Personally, I would love to see the return of Akira Kubo. We only saw him in that bit part in “Gamera, Guardian of the Universe”. And since Momoko Kochi and Hiroshi Koizumi reprised their roles from Godzilla and Mothra respectively, I say bring back Kubo as Tetsuo Teri! (or something close to that character).

This 30 second commercial from Pepsi still blows me away.

I hope Toho's Godzilla will have effects of this quality. Who am I kidding, this movie will be made in 5 months with sloppy post production as always.
