Having seen the film, the only similarities I see to GINO are the fan reactions to the changes in the creature design/abilities/possible origin. And that's it.

Yeah the asexual thing made me kind of go, "bleeeeeegh." At least GINO never really had "fire breath" he just yelled at things that exploded in front of him and pushed flames forward. Didn't they call it something like Power Breath? It had a goofy name to it.

Godzilla's breath is completely different.
GINO's breath was more like hot gas that had the ability to ignite. Shin-Godzilla's starts out as smoke, then straight up turns into a flame-thrower. The speed and intensity of the flames in Shin's breath puts GINO's to shame. No comparison.
And Shin doesn't reproduce in the film, where GINO does. Sure, they may discuss the ability, but he doesn't do it.

So the similarities are minimal at best.

Jim Ballard and JR have put up their video review. It's long but very informative.

They didn't like the movie but Whether one thinks they'll agree with their review is one thing but this is by far the most detailed and thorough breakdown of the movie that I've seen in English so far (from the effects to the plot, direction, EVERYTHING is covered here). It's obviously very spoiler heavy but they share a lot of insight on the movie, some of the behind the scenes stuff, and break it down piece by piece. Worth watching for anyone with questions about the film.

^ Very thorough, indeed - though I skipped around a bit because I didn't want the plot spelled out to me beat by beat.

The more important news is that they're essentially bringing back Sci-fi Japan TV under a different name.

There's a clip on Facebook, pretty un-spoilery, but it's of a few planes dropping bombs on him.

The CGI in it looks pretty awful to me. Not so much the CGI of Godzilla himself, but the compositing. Also, it's pretty obvious that they used some stock footage of planes flying and CGI'd bombs falling off of them.

This movie is making me sad.
