Only thing that will screw LP Godzilla up is if they can't find a director (which I doubt) OR Kong : Skull Island eats a big one at the box office.

Second-weekend actuals for Shin Godzilla are now on . The movie dropped just -13.4% in weekend two for a $5,305,152 haul and a ten-day total of $21,132,313 through Sunday, August 7. That total does not yet reflect whatever the film made over the past five weekdays.

The Bon Festival is still going on right now and pushed early releases of The Secret Life of Pets and The Jungle Book as I mentioned before. The Jungle Book was unable to top Shin Godzilla which is currently in a battle with The Secret Life of Pets for 1st place. Shin Godzilla will likely slip to second since apparently Sunday is a big family movie day, but it will be close. Shin Godzilla hasn't seen much of a drop from last weekend and currently sits at $29.7 million (estimated).

It sounds like 50 is virtually guaranteed, making this film more successful than Evangelion 2.0. If it can hit 60 to match or exceed Evangelion 3.0, it would perhaps give Anno reason to stick with Godzilla for a little while longer. Here's hoping.

^ I've read most projections putting it at about 4 million in total ticket sales, putting it comfortably in the top two-thirds of that list. Of course, some optimistic folks are putting it at at 5 or even over 5 - which would be great, but I'll err on the conservative side. 3.30 is the lowest estimate I've seen lately, maybe from a few weeks ago before the film showed it has serious legs.

... there should be a pun there about 'legs,' because of the complaints that Shin Godzilla's legs don't move convincingly, but that's a bit snarky for me. Maybe 'Unlike Shin Godzilla himself, his movie has legs!" ?

...at a certain point, I stop paying attention to the box office really and it's when it becomes an unqualified success, which it definitely is. Especially since it's not gonna break any records, arguing about it just seems so pointless.

Though I guess that's all we can argue about until we start seeing it

The way I look at it: the higher that B.O. number gets the easier it's gonna be to get a kaiju film made in Japan.

Currently $32.6 million [estimated]. It made $4.8 million over Saturday and Sunday and fell to second place due to new release The Secret Life of Pets making $5.0 million. Although some analysts are saying if Pets skews more to a younger audience, Godzilla may still have #1 due to higher ticket prices.

Only fell about 10% from last weekend. Maybe lower. 2.3+ million in attendance. Will top GMK Monday if it hasn't already.

Shin is no doubt going to make a ton of money, but the best qualifier for success is tickets sold. Period. And what makes anyone think those numbers are outdated? Denial? At $18 a ticket, 3.3 million tickets sold is well over $50 million in revenue, which is maybe slightly high if anything.
