I remember some of the G2 ads had Gamera's shell exploding for no reason without Legion's electric beam.

It's easier when you are not relying on scenes being rendered.

^And don't forget all the unused practical effects that have ended up in kaiju trailers of the past.

It's hard for me to get too worked up for what I already excepted would be the case. If they're going CG intensive on this schedule they better use all the time they have.

Pointing the finger at Toho for not delaying the movie at this late stage does no one any good. Historically, the only time any studio would consider changing a release date is at least a year in advance, and only if they have another comparable project originally slated for a later date that's somehow ready early and can be swapped in. There may be more flexibility in this since the need to duplicate films onto 35mm died out, but I doubt it's by much. There are a huge number of moving parts in the release of a film, bookings to hundreds or thousands of screens that are contracted a long time in advance and have to be honoured, marketing and distribution budgets that have to be allocated, and so on. It's not about Toho caring or not; I doubt any studio (Japanese or American) has the bottomless pockets it would take to scrub the release of one of their major tentpoles less than two months out. With enough money riding on a movie, it can take just one mishandled project to kill a studio: https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/films-that- ... 96121.html

So it's entirely possible that Toho over-reached and we'll end up with a rough, unfinished product as a result of the release date being god. But that's not Toho, it's the industry.

That damn puppet has to be useful for something to get them out of a jam...

God the production woes on this movie sound very interesting. If this movie somehow pulls off a miracle and becomes an instant hit, the "making of" extras on a blu-ray are going to epic. Like watching a sports team that isn't favored to win pull off an upset.

Don't look too much into the "forcing a smile" thing. This isn't sad Ben Affleck.

It's a stressfull, behind-schedule production. And it's also Japan. Of course he's forcing a smile in an interview.

I continue to be amazed by the amount and variety of advertising and merchandising tie-ins. Have previous Toho Godzilla films been exploited to this level?

I wonder how much of a profit this will have made Toho regardless of the film's eventual box office.

I'm on my phone, so linking to things is tticky, but SciFi Japan posted a new image from the film.

It's horrible.
I've never been so negative about an impending Godzilla film. Ever. He looks like a super wrinkly scrotum with a shriveled penis on top.
Gills.

Wow, this thing looks absolutely HORRIBLE. The proportions, the goofy thunder thighs, the fact that he's so comically huge...this Godzilla is not scary, he's goofy looking. Maybe he will look better in motion, but nothing I've seen so far makes me think he will.

PS - the Scifi Japan Article did confirm that

I still prefer it to GMK Godzilla's wobbly beergut but I agree the proportions head on are all off. In that photo it looks like Godzilla's arms were cut off and he is an amputee. I'll still remain optimistic though. The Millennium films were mostly a disappointment for me so my expectations coming into this were already fairly low. At least the design is different than most of the cookie cutter designs we've had for the past 60 years.

Design looks weird as hell but I still love it. No regrets.

I have no beef with the design but yes his proportions look doofy in that picture. If his proportions are the only thing we complain about and not piss and moan about bad CG, I will take that as a good thing for now. So far he has solid texturing. AND IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. Something I wish Pacific Rim and G'14 did more of.
