I was going to say we shouldn't worry cause Anno is in charge of the writing for the movie...

Yeah, Higuchi is a visual visionary... but in other respects? Let's just say it was the announcement of Anno writing a co-directing that allayed any misgivings for me.

Just read it - the talent behind the people designing the new Godzilla is well documented...and, according to the article, the new Godzilla is based on the original 54 design.

@Kain - I see no reason to worry - Higuchi's work on the Gamera films is incredible.

Oh, and the new G design is made by the same person who designed the Heisei Gamera monsters...I'm stoked! Legion is one of the most original kaiju to grace the screen and the Heisei Gamera design is my favorite Gamera look.

The talent behind this thing is really impressive, and it's great to hear about how long preproduction has being going on when the specter of rushed productions are still thick in people's minds.

Quite happy to hear that this design is heavily inspired by '54. It's always been one of my favorites, and sadly somewhat underused in its film (most closeups being the more mobile puppet head instead of the static costume head). I hope the 'scariness' of the new design doesn't reflect an attempt to evil-up Godzilla like so many fan designs you see, as I think that's a fundamental misunderstanding of the character.

I thought this was relevant to post here as well...

http://kotaku.com/the-first-attack-on-t ... 1721708870

The only positives I read from the review.

"The live-action Attack on Titan movie is from Toho. You know, the studio that brought the world Godzilla. There are scenes at the end with actors in suits fighting in what looks like a miniature city. This is what Toho does best, and these scenes were far more thrilling than any of the movie’s lackluster CG. Attack on Titan is, at its heart, a monster movie. This is what the whole film should’ve been: Actors in suits destroying little buildings. Not computer graphics.

Shame, because in Attack on Titan, it seems like that’s the only thing Higuchi is interested in—filming actors in Titan suits. I know I was more interested in watching them. But there’s something wrong when the film’s best performances are the Titans’. Understandable, because the humans are either bickering, despicable, or worse, boring. If only the movie had more of an edge to it than its 12-and-up rating allows! The romance stuff falls flat and feels like it was shoehorned in to, probably in the eyes of a Japanese studio exec somewhere, make this more palatable as a date movie."

I'd like to see more reviews from people that have no idea what Attack on Titan is... Anyways it does seem Higuchi should stick to effects work rather than sitting in the directors chair. If anything the pummeling he is getting for Attack on Titan will hopefully help him shape the new Godzilla.

I just hope that even if they go the scary route, this film is still accessible to fans of most ages.

I dunno, Gojira is pretty terrifying in many respects. It's hard to imagine what Higuchi means - Gamera 3 had some dark, scary moments. I'm ok with a dark film as long as it's well-done, but you also have to balance a "scary" Godzilla with the tone of the character. GMK had an evil Godzilla and some fans took fault with that.

I'm hoping we see Godzilla battle another monster, though.

Great read! I'm glad that Higuchi liked Godzilla '14, too.

It's worth zooming in on the article's statement that the movie will use a "hybrid" VFX approach like Attack on Titan. I expect Godzilla will look better, simply because I don't expect it to imitate anime or manga. Imitation isn't the only problem with that film's effects, judging from what the trailers have shown, but it seems worth keeping in mind going into G2016. I'll be pleased if it looks like Gamera 2 or 3.

I don't remember how Toho went about announcing actors that would be in their movies but shouldn't we have had some sort of casting news by now?

I don't know if they have things like suits/model sets already constructed or in the works but if they had any kind of pre-production going they have about 10 months until the movie should be out. Higuchi doesn't really need to bother himself with filming scenes with actors so he should have plenty of time to get his ideas on film. He had less time between Gamera 1 and 2. I don't even really care if the Special Effects surpass Gamera 2 or 3. As long as they are filmed in crisp high definition and they are thrilling then I am happy at the end of the day.

Or maybe he blows it. LOL who knows. What is nice about this is I don't have to keep saying "What if Toho hired Higuchi to work on a Godzilla movie..."

We had Kaneko on a Godzilla movie and now we have Higuchi. Unless we find out Toho really messed with the production of the movie I can't really complain anymore.

I think the 1up Higuchi has over the Attack on Titan film is that here he has the ability to do something original and not worry about following a guideline like he did with Attack On Titan.

I found this pretty relevant given Higuchi is doing the effects for both films - I think this looks awesome and quite terrifying. It also makes me wonder how Godzilla is going to look...I mean, AoT has a distinctly dark, anime feel from the trailer and I'm not sure I want to see a similar Godzilla movie shot in bleak, depressing colors. Still, Higuchi is basically awesome and I admire his work, especially on G2 and G3.

This screams G'16 imo. If any part of that trailer is an indication of what Godzilla VFX will look like, it is right there. Doesn't mean he will have the same scowl on his face, just the technique used.
