I'm not getting all the doom and gloom about the new movie and design. Most Godzilla designs look wonky from some angles, especially from the front on. Have we forgotten how chunky and pinheaded the fan favorite Heisei design could be? But seen from the side, with his fins and tail on full display, he looked much better, and it's the same for Shin Gojira.
Let's look at common Godzilla design traits -
Small head, long neck
Medium sized arms
Thick, sturdy body (especially the legs)
3 rows of bony dorsal fins (with the largest in the center)
Long, segmented tail (with either a pointed or rounded end)
4 claws on his hands and feet
You can downplay or exaggerate certain features, and that's certainly the case here, but it's not some design they pulled out of a hat. It's still playing within the basic design silhouette for the character, and not in a sketchy way like GINO.
